Do you have investment accounts at more than one firm? Many families set things up this way for added peace of mind, and that instinct makes sense.

When accounts are managed separately, some details can be easy to miss. Funds held in different places may overlap with one another, and capital gains distributions from those funds can arrive at tax time without much warning. Diversification depends on how your investments are allocated across the whole household, which can be hard to see when no one is looking at everything together.

If you have accounts in more than one place and would like a fresh look at how they fit together, we’re glad to talk it through.

This week is National Estate Planning Awareness Week, a helpful reminder to check whether your estate plan still reflects your wishes.

Estate plans are often written once and set aside. Over time, a marriage, a new grandchild, a move, or a change in tax law can leave documents and beneficiary designations out of step with what you intend.

To make that first review easier, we offer a short estate checkup questionnaire that takes just a few minutes on your phone or computer. Your answers produce specific recommendations, such as documents that may need updating, which we can review together if that would be helpful.

If you’d like to take it, send us a message here on Facebook with the word ESTATE and we’ll send you your link.

If you’re approaching 65 and not yet receiving Social Security benefits, you’ll need to sign up for Medicare yourself. George explains the seven-month enrollment window around your birthday, how your sign-up timing affects when coverage begins, what may change if you or your spouse are still working with employer coverage, and what can happen if the window passes.

Our blog covers the full timeline, including what to watch for in Ohio. If you’d like to talk through how this applies to your own plans, you can reach our team at mpmwealth.com.

A qualified charitable distribution, a donor-advised fund, and a direct gift can all support the same cause. How each is structured can affect what the gift actually costs you.

Withdrawing from an IRA to fund a gift, rather than using a QCD, generally triggers ordinary income tax on the withdrawal first. A direct gift may produce no tax benefit if you do not itemize deductions. A donor-advised fund funded without a giving timeline in mind can leave money sitting invested longer than intended.

How a gift is structured can matter as much as the gift itself.

Giving season is here, and how you give can matter as much as what you give.

In this video, we walk through three common ways to support the causes you care about: a qualified charitable distribution (QCD) from your IRA, a donor-advised fund, and a direct gift.

Each one works a little differently at tax time, and the right fit depends on your situation.
If you’re thinking about how to give this year, we’re happy to talk it through.

If giving to charity is already part of your plan, your required minimum distribution can do double duty. A qualified charitable distribution lets you send some or all of it straight to a qualified charity, and that amount comes out of your taxable income entirely. Some things to think about:

Where your income is actually going to come from, month to month.
When you’ll enroll in Medicare, and whether you need to do anything before you turn 65.
And a rough budget for the first year, since spending patterns often look different once the structure of a work schedule is gone.
