The IRS gave an update to the NO TAX on Tips and NO TAX on OVERTIME rules from The One Big Beautiful Bill. These provisions are set to expire in 2028, but the IRS has made some adjustments for 2026. The employer is now responsible for indicating all qualified overtime. Any missing overtime or errors need to be adjusted by the employer.

The IRS has also added new fields when it comes to those who qualify for the no tax on tips provision. Income thresholds still apply and so do deduction maximums. Those have not changed from last year to this year.

Myth: I should wait until tax season.

Tax season is for filing. Tax planning happens throughout the year.

Many tax-saving decisions need to be made before the year ends—when you still have time to make adjustments, plan purchases, review your business structure, and take advantage of strategies that may apply to you.

Don’t wait until it’s time to file to start thinking about taxes.

Myth: My CPA already handles my tax planning.

Maybe…but don’t assume.

Tax preparation typically focuses on what already happened. Tax planning looks ahead—identifying opportunities, making adjustments, and creating strategies before the year is over.

Ask the question: “What are we doing now to reduce my tax burden before year-end?”

If there’s no clear answer, it may be time for a tax planning conversation.

A new year doesn’t mean last year’s tax changes disappeared.

Several tax provisions that took effect in 2025 continue into 2026 and beyond — which means they may still impact how you plan, spend, and prepare for taxes this year.

From deductions for tips and overtime to vehicle loan interest, QBI, and business equipment — knowing what’s still available matters.

Tax laws change. Good tax planning keeps up.

Myth: Claiming a home office deduction is an automatic audit trigger.

Not true.

With more people working and running businesses from home, a home office isn’t unusual. If you qualify, claim it. Just make sure you’re following the rules and keeping the proper documentation.

Don’t let an outdated tax myth keep you from a deduction you may qualify for.

Many business owners assume all of their business profit is subject to self-employment tax. In the right situation, an S-Corp election can reduce the amount subject to payroll taxes by paying a reasonable salary and taking the remaining profit as distributions.

The key is making sure it’s done correctly—and that an S-Corp is actually the right fit for your business.

Spending more just to save on taxes isn’t the best tax planning advice.

The best tax strategies don’t always require buying something. They help you keep more of what you earn while making smarter business decisions. When a purchase makes sense for your business, it can absolutely be part of your tax plan—but it shouldn’t be the first strategy you reach for.
