I haven't heard of a specific scam yet, but be on the look out as those who prey on others will be using this as an opportunity. Do not be pressured into anything. One thing our clients often do is tell the caller they need to get their accountant on the line and see how they react. That usually causes a hang up and if not then get their number to call them back after they talk to us.

If you owe the IRS there is a reasonable chance you will be contacted by one of these agencies. Its also an opportunity for scammers to get to you too, so do your due diligence and be careful, but do not ignore notices from the IRS that say yo owe money. If in doubt research before you pay but do not ignore these notices.

Taxpayers who are contacted by a private collection agency on behalf of the IRS might have questions about the program. These taxpayers can visit IRS.gov to find answers to questions they might have.
