Here is a quiet gift to your January self: reconcile the books this month.

Year-end goes smoothly for the businesses whose accounts already match the bank when December arrives, and slowly for everyone else. The difference is usually one afternoon a month.

If reconciling feels like a foreign language, we can set it up so it is not.

There are ten weeks left in the tax year.

That matters because most of what changes April's number has to happen before December 31. Equipment purchases, retirement contributions, how you pay yourself. In October those are still decisions. In February they are history.

If you want to look at your year while it can still move, this is the window.

The morning after a deadline is a good time to say what the work is actually for.

Erin wrote that what she and her family appreciate most is peace of mind: never wondering whether something was filed or a date was missed, because it is already handled. That is the standard we hold ourselves to all year, not just in October.

Thank you, Erin. After five years, reviews like this one still make our week.

Today is the day. Extended 2025 returns are due.

One thing matters more than the rest: file today even if you cannot pay the full balance. Filing late costs 5% of the unpaid tax per month. Paying late costs 0.5%. A filed return with a balance due is a solvable problem, and we solve them all the time.

If you are stuck this morning, call. That is what the phone is for.

Two days. Extended 2025 returns are due this Thursday, October 15.

If your return is finished and waiting on a signature, send it today. If it is not finished, call this morning rather than Wednesday night. Two days is workable. Two hours is a scramble.

If your tax records are a shoebox, bring the shoebox.

Every October someone goes quiet the week before the 15th because their paperwork feels too disorganized to hand over. Please do not be that person. Sorting paper is part of the job, and we are good at it.

Six days out, done beats tidy.

October 15 is next week. If you extended your 2025 individual or corporate return, this is the final stop on the calendar: there is no second extension.

The most useful thing you can do this week is send whatever is still missing from your file. Odd statements, half-sorted folders, the spreadsheet you never finished. We would rather have it messy now than complete on the 14th.

Some kind words we are grateful for.

Steve has been with us for several years, and what he points to is not speed or price. It is that we take the time to fully understand the business before touching the numbers. That is the order the work has to happen in.

Thank you, Steve. And thank you to everyone who passes our name along.

January's 1099s are decided in the fall.

Every contractor and service provider you pay needs a Form W-9 on file: contractors, lawyers, repair service providers, landlords, even your CPA. The easiest moment to ask for one is before the first check goes out. Ask in January and you are chasing people who have already been paid and have no reason to hurry.

If you are not sure who needs one, that is a quick phone call.

Here is the thing about next April's number: it is mostly decided by what happens between now and December.

Once the year closes, we are reporting history. Before it closes there are still choices: timing, structure, what to buy and when, how you pay yourself. None of it is dramatic. It just has to happen while there is still year left.

That is what the quiet quarter is for. If you have never had that conversation with a CPA, it costs nothing to have it once.
