Don't Be Fooled

Politicians love to claim that their respective parties have all the answers, and if elected will improve the lives and fortunes of the electorate at large.

Long-term historical data shows that the American economy and stock market largely ignore the short-term gyrations of mid-term elections. The market has responded both positively and negatively to Democrats and/or Republicans taking control of one of both houses of Congress.

The best thing a patient, long-term investor should do is stick to the financial basics: live within your means, eliminate consumer debt, and keep investing according to your risk tolerance on a regular basis regardless of the news cycle.

Make Good Choices

There are so many things that impact markets that are outside of our control - political problems, military conflicts, business cycles, and innumerable others.

But there are also things we CAN control - not buying a brand new car off the lot; not overspending every month and running up credit card debt; participating in our company 401k plan; avoiding wasteful spending and making other good financial decisions.

Focus on the things that are within your own power, and you'll find investing to be less stressful and ultimately more rewarding when you start seeing the results of your positive decisions. There's nothing wrong with having hobbies; but when hobbies take priority over sound financial decisions - funding retirement plans, paying down debt, saving money to buy a home, etc - then we start having a problem.

Make sure the basics are covered first: building a 6-12 month emergency fund, contributing to 401k/IRA accounts, and aggressively eliminating credit card debt. After that, have fun!

Trading is Not Investing

Very few investors consistently beat the market over time. In fact, the overwhelming number of actively-managed mutual funds and ETFs - run by seasoned Wall Street pros with millions of dollars in technology and research - underperform a passive index like the S&P 500.

The better bet for a patient, long-term investor is to use inexpensive, broad-market index funds. If experienced Wall Street pros rarely beat the market, the rest of us have even less of a chance.

Trading is NOT Investing

This poor guy lives on a steady diet of acid reflux tablets, constant business news, and sleep aids.

The simple truth is that most day traders don't beat the market as a whole, and in fact many of them wind up underperforming and losing money over time.
