There are changes to the Child Tax Credit (CTC) for the tax year 2021!

Families who qualify for the CTC will receive advance payments. The IRS will pay half of the total credit amount in advance beginning July 15th. You will claim the other half when you file your 2021 income tax return.

A benefit is families have more cash during the year and do not have to wait until the end of the year to receive all of their credit.

The danger is if you receive CTC payments in excess of your allowable CTC for the 2021 tax year you will generally have to repay the excess in the form of an increase in federal income tax liability on your 2021 tax return.
