Schwartz Associates had the opportunity to participate in the 2026 Commercial Receivers Association Annual Conference this week in Colorado.

Our team members, Marc Schwartz and Kevin Ortiz, joined the panel discussion, “Cryptocurrency Risks & Safeguards: Stablecoin Is Coming to a Business Near You,” sharing insights on the evolving role of cryptocurrency and stablecoins in business, receiverships, and financial investigations.

The presentation was well received by the audience, and we appreciated the opportunity to engage in such a timely and important discussion. As digital assets become increasingly integrated into traditional business operations, understanding the risks and knowing how to identify and address them is more important than ever.

Thank you to the Commercial Receivers Association for bringing together professionals from across the industry. We’re proud to have Marc Schwartz and representing Schwartz Associates and look forward to continuing the conversation next year.

"For our friends in the Divorce Bar, here's a statistic worth paying attention to: The National Cryptocurrency Association reported in March that 54% of adults between the ages of 25 and 54 own cryptocurrency.

If you're not seeing cryptocurrency in marital estates, you should be asking why.

At Schwartz Associates, we've traced more than $1.2 billion in cryptocurrency in matters involving fraud, asset recovery, and litigation.

If you'd like to learn more about cryptocurrency ownership trends, you can download the National Cryptocurrency Association's report here: https://nca.org/resources."

"Crypto is untraceable." It's one of the biggest myths in digital asset investigations. Because blockchain transactions are permanent and transparent, cryptocurrency can often be traced years after a scam occurs.
At Schwartz Associates, we've traced:
• $1.8 million in scammed Bitcoin in a single November 2024 investigation.
• More than $1.7 billion in scammed cryptocurrency over several years.
If you or your clients have been victims of cryptocurrency fraud, don't assume the money is gone forever.
📩 Contact Kevin Ortiz, Manager of Blockchain Forensics, to learn how our team can help trace digital assets and support investigations.

A fake support number, a seed phrase, and more than $1.5 million gone.

An investor wanted to stake their crypto and searched online for a support phone number. The number they found was one of many planted across sites that collect referral fees for feeding callers into a scam operation.

The person who answered took a few details and issued a reference number to make the call feel official. Within five minutes, a "specialist" called back using an alias.

The playbook from there:
1. The scammer claimed staking required a new software wallet and walked the victim through creating one from an emailed link.
2. The hook: the victim's hardware wallet was supposedly out of date and their funds were "at risk."
3. The victim was asked to retrieve their recovery seed phrase and type it into a twelve-word entry screen, framed as a routine transfer to the new wallet.

Minutes later, more than $1.5 million in Bitcoin, Ethereum, and other digital assets moved to wallets the scammers controlled.

Three points worth repeating to every client:
• No legitimate platform, wallet provider, or support rep will ever ask for your seed phrase. Not to stake, not to update firmware, not to "protect" your funds.
• A hardware wallet only protects keys that never leave the device. Typing the seed phrase into any screen defeats it entirely.
• Phone numbers pulled from search results are not verified. Go directly to the official website or app.

Stolen crypto leaves a trail. Blockchain tracing can establish where funds moved, support law enforcement referrals, and inform civil recovery strategy. The earlier the tracing starts, the more options stay on the table.

Kicking off the week with valuable insight from our Chariman, Marc Schwartz: According to the National Cryptocurrency Association’s “2026 State of Crypto Holders Report”, 1 in 4 U.S. adults now own cryptocurrency, and ownership rises to 54% among adults ages 25–54.

For family law practitioners, this is a statistic worth paying attention to. As digital assets become more common, they are increasingly relevant in divorce proceedings and asset division.

At Schwartz Associates LLC, our team specializes in identifying, tracing, and valuing cryptocurrency to help uncover digital assets that may otherwise go unnoticed. For a copy of NCA’s report, please email: [email protected]

"Crypto is anonymous." It's one of the biggest misconceptions in digital asset investigations. In reality, most cryptocurrencies are pseudonymous. Every transaction is recorded on a public blockchain, creating a permanent trail that can often be traced back to individuals or entities through forensic analysis.

For attorneys handling fraud, asset recovery, bankruptcy, divorce, or other financial disputes, understanding this distinction can make all the difference. What appears hidden may simply require the right expertise to uncover.

Our team helps legal professionals trace cryptocurrency transactions, identify digital assets, and transform blockchain data into clear, defensible evidence for litigation and investigations. If cryptocurrency is part of your case, we're here to help.
