💰 TAXPERT TIP: “My return is under further review. What does that mean?”
First—don’t panic. “Further review” does NOT automatically mean you’re being audited or that you did something wrong.
Most of the time, it simply means the IRS stopped your return because they want to verify something—your income, withholding, credits, or information reported to them.
And yes, if you’re expecting a refund, the IRS is holding onto your money while they figure it out. 🙄
Here’s my advice: Don’t just sit there for months wondering.
If you received a notice, READ IT. It will usually tell you how long they want you to wait. Once that time has passed, start calling.
Check Where’s My Refund? and your IRS online account first. If nothing has changed, CALL.
I tell my clients this all the time: sometimes the difference between an IRS problem sitting there for months and getting resolved is simply getting the right person on the phone.
Be patient. Be persistent. Have your documents in front of you.
And remember: “Further review” sounds scary. Most of the time, it simply means the IRS isn’t finished with your return yet.
