"Two weeks from today, the extended deadline hits for S-Corp and Partnership returns: September 15.

If you're one of our clients on extension, today is the day — this is the last date to get your final information to us and still be confident your return is filed on time.

Here's why the timeline matters: once information comes in, it still has to be prepared, reviewed, and finalized before the 15th. The closer we get to the deadline, the less room there is to catch questions, missing documents, or last-minute surprises. Submitting today gives your return the time it actually needs.

If you're not sure what's still outstanding on your file, reach out — we're happy to walk through exactly what we need from you.

And if you're a business owner who isn't on extension but has been putting off getting organized for next year, this is also a good moment to start that conversation early, before the next deadline sneaks up in the same way.

Two weeks goes by fast this time of year. Let's not let it catch anyone off guard.

"Calling someone a 1099 contractor doesn't make them one. The IRS doesn't care what you call the relationship — it looks at how it actually works.

Three areas the IRS (and the Department of Labor) look at:

Behavioral control: Do you tell the worker exactly how, when, and where to do the job? The more control you exert over the details, the more it looks like employment.

Financial control: Does the worker have their own tools, cover their own expenses, and have the opportunity for profit or loss? Or are they paid a set amount with everything provided?

Relationship type: Is this ongoing and open-ended, or a defined project with an end date? Do they get benefits typically reserved for employees?

Misclassifying a worker isn't a small paperwork issue. If the IRS or a state agency reclassifies a contractor as an employee after the fact, you can be on the hook for back payroll taxes, penalties, and interest — sometimes years' worth.

This trips up a lot of growing businesses, especially ones that started with one or two contractors and have added more people without revisiting the classification.

If you have contractors on your team and haven't reviewed this in a while, it's worth a second look before it becomes a bigger problem.

"There's a window between now and December 31 where tax planning still works — and it's closing faster than it feels like it is.

We're opening up fall tax planning sessions for business owners, self-employed individuals, and investors who want to head into year-end with a real plan instead of a guess. That means looking at where your income actually landed this year, what deductions and credits you're on track for, whether your quarterly payments are keeping you out of penalty territory, and whether any moves before December 31 — retirement contributions, entity changes, equipment purchases, charitable giving — make sense for your specific numbers.

This isn't a generic checklist. It's a conversation built around your actual situation, with enough time left in the year to actually act on what we find.

Spots fill up as we get closer to year-end, especially with S-Corp and Partnership deadlines behind us and everyone's attention turning toward Q4. If you've been meaning to get serious about planning instead of just filing, this is the moment.

We've been helping Houston business owners and families plan ahead since 1980, and fall is when that planning pays off the most.

Ready to talk through your year before it's over? Visit www.molentax.com to book a fall planning session."

"We offer free second-look reviews on prior returns, and here's an honest pattern we see often: it's rarely just one thing.

Sometimes it's a home office that was never claimed. Sometimes it's a retirement contribution that could've been made but wasn't. Sometimes it's a business structure that made sense five years ago and hasn't been revisited since income grew.

None of these are dramatic errors. Nobody did anything wrong. Tax law is complicated, situations change, and most preparers are working through a high volume of returns without a lot of time to dig deep into any one of them.

That's exactly why a second look is worth doing every few years, even if you like your current preparer and plan to stay with them. A fresh set of eyes, without the time pressure of the middle of tax season, tends to catch what gets missed the first time around.

We're not going to promise you'll find a windfall — sometimes a second look confirms everything was done right, and that's a good outcome too. But if it's been a while since anyone gave your return a close, unhurried read, it might be worth finding out.

Curious what a second look might find in yours? Reach out to Molen & Associates at www.molentax.com."

"Four years ago, Brittany Pullin joined Molen & Associates — and honestly, it's hard to imagine our team without her now.

In that time, she's prepared 100s of returns, supported client work behind the scenes and been part of the day-to-day effort that keeps this firm running the way our clients expect. Four years in this industry means four tax seasons, multiple deadlines, and a whole lot of client calls handled with patience and care.

We don't say this enough, but the people who show up consistently — year after year, deadline after deadline — are the reason Molen & Associates has been able to serve Houston since 1980. Brittany is one of those people.

Here's to four years, Brittany. We're grateful for the work you do and the way you do it.

"By the time your return lands on a preparer's desk in February or March, most of the decisions that actually move the needle have already been made — or missed.

Retirement contributions for the prior year (with a few exceptions) are locked in. Entity structure changes that could've saved you thousands in self-employment tax weren't made in time. Equipment purchases, timing of income, charitable strategies — all decisions with deadlines that quietly passed while taxes felt like a later problem.

This is the real difference between tax preparation and tax planning. Preparation reports what already happened. Planning tries to change what happens before it's locked in.

The business owners and investors who consistently pay less in tax, legally and comfortably, aren't doing anything exotic. They're just having the conversation in July instead of March — while there's still time to act on what comes out of it.

We get it: taxes aren't fun to think about outside of tax season. But a 30-minute conversation now can be worth a lot more than the same conversation five months from now, after the window has closed.

If it's been over a year since anyone looked at your full tax picture proactively, now's a good time.

Visit www.molentax.com to schedule a planning conversation."

"One month from today, a big one hits: September 15.

That date covers two separate deadlines that both matter a lot, depending on your situation.

If you're an S-Corp or Partnership that filed an extension back in March, September 15 is your filing deadline. No more extensions after this one — miss it, and penalties start stacking up fast, calculated per shareholder or partner, per month late.

If you're self-employed, a business owner, or anyone who pays quarterly estimated taxes, September 15 is also when your Q3 estimated payment is due — covering income earned June through August.

The next 30 days are the time to get ahead of both. If you're on extension, that means getting final numbers to your preparer now, not the week of the 14th. If you're paying quarterly, it means running the numbers on your year-to-date income so you're not guessing.

Waiting until the second week of September to think about either one rarely ends well — for your return or your blood pressure.

If you're not sure which of these applies to you, that's a totally normal question, and a quick call is usually all it takes to find out.

Need help getting ready before September 15? Reach out to Molen & Associates at www.molentax.com."

Tax season is stressful for one reason: most business owners wait until February to sort out a full year of finances. Here is what separates clients who breeze through tax season from those who scramble - they keep up with their books all year.

What that looks like in practice: reconcile accounts monthly (do not wait until December to figure out where the money went), separate business and personal finances (one dedicated business account eliminates most confusion), categorize expenses as they happen using QuickBooks, Wave, or even a simple spreadsheet, track receipts digitally because a photo in a folder beats a shoebox of crumpled paper every time, and review your profit and loss quarterly so you know where you stand.

Good bookkeeping is not just about taxes. It is about clarity and running a better business. Molen & Associates offers bookkeeping and accounting support for Houston-area businesses.

Scout is obsessed with bookkeeping.

Like, genuinely obsessed. He color-codes his expense categories. He has a name for his calculator. He reconciles accounts on the last day of every month with a coffee in hand and what can only be described as actual joy.

But here's why it matters for you.

The business owners who breeze through tax season aren't doing something magical in April. They're doing something simple all year long — they keep up with their books.

What that actually looks like:
• Reconcile your accounts monthly. Don't wait until December to reconstruct a full year.
• Keep business and personal completely separate. One dedicated account eliminates most confusion.
• Categorize expenses as they happen — QuickBooks, Wave, or even a simple spreadsheet works.
• Save receipts digitally. A photo in a folder beats a shoebox every time.
• Review your P&L quarterly so you always know where you stand.

Good books don't just make tax season easier. They help you run a better business.

Scout approves this message. Enthusiastically.
