Financial Consulate

Financial Consulate We are a fee-only financial planning firm dedicated to acting in our clients' best interests at all times. What makes us different? See notes for disclaimer.

For over 40 years, Financial Consulate has served pre-retirees and retirees who've quietly built $1M+ in assets and want one simple thing: peace of mind that they're not making costly mistakes. Unlike most advisors who just coordinate with your CPA, we ARE your CPA. Nearly half our advisors are CPAs, backed by a dedicated tax team. We integrate tax planning into every financial decision—from pre-r

etirement Roth conversions to managing RMDs, QCDs, and IRMAA thresholds. We deliver a comprehensive Financial Physical—complete financial plan, tax audit, insurance review, and estate analysis—BEFORE asking you to become a client. You get tangible value immediately and can evaluate our work based on actual results, not promises. We grew organically through our radio show and client referrals because our advisors focus on teaching, not selling. As a fee-only fiduciary and NAPFA member, we're legally bound to put your interests first. Tune in to our radio show, Money, Riches & Wealth, every Wednesday from 6-7pm on WCBM AM 680, or visit our website to schedule a complimentary introductory meeting.

You should be able to get straight answers about your investments.

What is your rate of return? What are you paying in fees? How would your portfolio hold up if the market dropped 20%?

These aren't complicated questions, and you deserve clear responses, not vague reassurances.

If you're not getting direct answers from your current advisor, let’s talk:

If you've changed jobs a few times over your career, there is a reasonable chance your retirement savings are spread across plans you haven't thought about in years.

That creates a real problem, and not because any one account is necessarily wrong. It's genuinely difficult to make good decisions about your retirement when you can't see everything in one place. Are you overweight in equities without realizing it? Are two of those old plans invested almost identically? You may not know.

Bringing old accounts together doesn't make sense for everyone, but knowing what you have and how it all fits together always does.

Most retirees know they have to take their RMDs. Fewer realize the timing is largely up to them, and that choosing wisely can have real tax consequences. Madison Bennett walks through the key timing decisions around required minimum distributions: what drives the choice, how to use your RMD for tax withholding, and when a qualified charitable distribution might make more sense than a standard withdrawal.

Learn when to take RMDs before your first required distribution. Madison Bennett is a fee-only financial advisor with Financial Consulate in Hunt Valley, MD.

What happens to your HSA money if you don't use it before retirement?

It rolls over each year and after 65, you can withdraw it for any reason without penalty (though you'll pay income tax if it's not for medical expenses).

An HSA can work like an extra retirement account if you're maxing it out and paying medical expenses out of pocket during your working years. You're building a tax-free reserve for healthcare costs later, which can be significant.

We review HSA strategies during the Financial Physical® because it's one of those accounts that gets overlooked in the bigger retirement picture.

A couple came to us recently with 7 different investment accounts spread across 3 institutions. They had no idea how much overlap there was or whether their overall allocation made sense.

Consolidation isn't always the answer, but clarity is. We mapped out what they owned, identified the redundancies, and built a structure that was easier to manage and better aligned with their goals.

If you're juggling accounts and don't have a clear picture of what you actually own, let's talk.
