Listening to people talk about their dreams and goals always makes my day! As an advisor, I get to help many people achieve their dreams, and over the years I can tell you there are two types of dreams I see the most.
1. Travel. Most of my clients want to "see the world", experience different cultures, and see the beautiful sights that make our planet so lovely.
2. Create. Many people feel the urge to build or make something with their own two hands — from writing a novel, restoring a classic car, or building a treehouse for their grandkids.
Reflecting on this made me think of a story I once heard that incorporates both types of goals. It’s the story of the Guoliang Tunnel.
The village of Guoliang lies in the Taihang Mountains in central China. For most of its history, it could only be reached by a rugged path carved into the mountainside. In many respects, the village was isolated from the rest of China. As the rest of the country began to grow and modernize around them, Guoliang was effectively left stuck in the past. For years, the villagers lobbied the government to build a modern road that could connect Guoliang with the lands below, but to no avail. So, they had a choice: either abandon the village, or build the road themselves.
They chose the latter.
Building a road would be a monumental task. They would have to tunnel through the side of the mountain – and since they had no access to modern construction equipment, they would have to do it by hand. On top of that, to be able to afford the needed supplies, the town had to sell off many of their animals and other provisions.
That wasn’t enough to stop them.
They sent their 13 strongest citizens to carve through the rock and hollow out a road. Those citizens worked for over five years, scraping, digging and chiseling. When they finished, the outside world realized that the people of Guoliang had not only created a road, but a work of art. The tunnel they fashioned was held up by natural rock pillars, creating a series of “windows” in the side of the mountain. It’s a sight that no one who has seen it could ever forget. Today, tourists come from around the world to witness its beauty. It’s a perfect example of the power of planning, perseverance, and community.
Whether your goal is to visit the natural wonders of our planet or build something with your own two hands, I wish you the best in your endeavors — and am always happy to help!

This Memorial Day, we thankfully remember those who have fought, who are fighting, and who will continue to fight to preserve our liberty and the right of all people to live in freedom.

As we pause to give thanks on this holiday, let’s fly our flags a little more proudly and keep alive the spirit of American patriotism that is burning bright in us today.
