Today marks our 11th anniversary. This incredible girl and I started dating in 2010 and got married in 2014. Over the last decade plus, I’ve sat by Cory’s side and held her hand as she experienced the loss of her father, and her best friend. I’ve watched her leave the “stuffy” corporate world to spread her creative wings, and chase her entrepreneurial dream. I’ve watched her create something out of nothing and build a community that adores her. We navigated infertility challenges to start a family and through it all, she’s been my biggest cheerleader and the person who motivates and encourages me unlike any other. She’s my daily reminder that the single most important investment that we make in our lives is in the person we choose to do life with. Cory is my biggest multiplier, and I couldn’t imagine doing life without you. Happy anniversary !

“I thought I was ready to retire… until I did.”

Earlier this week, I was visiting with a new client.

He was sharing a little bit of his background with me, and mentioned something that really resonated.

A couple of years ago, he “test drove” retirement.

He stepped away from work, turned off the early alarms, and tried the lifestyle he’d been picturing for years.

But within a couple of months?

He said he was going stir crazy.

Every day started to feel the same. Time stretched on without structure, without challenge, without purpose. He quickly realized that the vision he had for retirement didn’t match the reality.

So he made a decision.

Sitting at home wasn’t for him.

He leaned into something he felt called to do—and today, at the age of 70, he’s working 7 days a week following his passion for ministry as a pastor.

And you know what he told me?

“I’ve never been happier.”

This story speaks to one of the most overlooked truths about retirement:

It’s not just about what you’re retiring from.
It’s about what you’re retiring to.

For so many people, retirement is seen as a finish line. A reward. A long-overdue pause from the grind.

And while there’s absolutely a season for rest and reprieve, the honeymoon phase doesn’t last forever.

At some point, a deeper question begins to surface:

“Is this it?”

That’s why the starting point in our planning process isn’t just about dollars and spreadsheets.

We begin with a process of clarifying your vision - where you want to go, and your values - what's most important to you along the way.

Because how you structure your time, the relationships you invest in, and the clarity of intention that you approach this next chapter with, will have just a much influence, if not more, as your financial strategy when it comes to the experience you get to enjoy.

That conversation this week reminded me was a great reminder:

Retirement isn’t the end.
It’s a beginning.
And the way you plan for it should reflect that reality.

One of the important mindset shifts that we encourage people to consider as they get closer to retirement is how they'll measure success as they move through retirement.

Will it be based on quarterly statements and percentage points?

On the size of your balance sheet?

On the opportunity to brag to your neighbors or golfing buddies about your stock picks?

Many of us have been conditioned to think of money as a report card for our social status, but the happiest retirees aren't babysitting brokerage accounts.

They're as busy as they want to be doing the things that bring them happiness, spending time making memories with the people they love, and resting easy at the end of each day.

These are the characteristics that the most successful retirees share, and they define the targets that transformational planning should focus on.

Start with the end in mind, and if you'd like some guidance, consider joining me for our upcoming Retirement Clarity workshop - check out the following link for details...

The most financially successful people I know aren't the people who have the biggest balance sheets.

They're the ones who have the clearest alignment of their money to the things that matter most to them.

If retirement is on your mind, and you want to make sure you're in a position to do the same, consider joining us for an upcoming retirement planning workshop, where we'll unpack our process for helping you gain clarity and confidence as you prepare for this critical life change.

It also echos a few important principles that I often talk about with our professional clients who are trying to do the same for their families. Here are the 5 I think are most important to keep top of mind:

(1) Start with the end in mind: I work with a lot of couples in their 60s who are in the process of retiring, and you'd be surprised how few of them have a really clear picture of what they want out of their next chapter. For a lot of us, life is so hectic, it's tough so slow down long enough to really think and reflect about what you want life to look like in the future. So you just put your head down, go to work, and look up a couple decades down the road to try and figure out where you ended up. The sooner and more confidently you can define where you want to go, and why it matters to you, the more clearly you can make decisions that align with those outcomes.

(2) Understand the mechanics: We have 3 levers that we can pull when we're trying to build wealth. Our income, our expenses, and what we do with whatever's left over. The #1 thing that will help you build wealth faster isn't trying to pinpoint an extra couple hundred dollars you can cut from your budget. It's increasing your earning capacity, and building a system to increase the difference between what you bring in and what you spend. Once that system is in place, you can focus more on what to do with it.

(3) Automate where you can: Convenience can work for us or against us, so you want to be conscious of the ways it may be costing you - think subscriptions you aren't using, spending on things that don't align with your value system, and other leaks like inefficient tax structure. And more "unconscious" around the habits that help put building wealth on autopilot. This can include strategies like automatically "paying yourself first", autoinvesting, and incorporating a plan to diversify your tax structure.

(4) Communicate with your spouse: For a long time, finances have been a leading cause of divorce and other stress related health factors. The most effective financial couples are on the same page about what's important to them as a family, and they're accountable to each other to ensure they're consistently pulling the same direction.

(5) Your investment strategy is only a piece of the bigger financial picture. A lot of the focus in the world of professional finance is on where you should put your money. This is important, but the best teams are great at offense and defense. If there are outside risks that could threaten your opportunity to earn and mataintain your lifestyle, you want to make sure you understand the potential cost that exposure presents, and build appropriate safety nets wherever it could potentially be most costly to you or your family.

I’ve always believed that the best retirement plans don’t start with a product — they start with a conversation.

That’s why I’m launching something new this week: a series of small, in-person retirement workshops designed to bring real education and clarity back into the planning process.

The first one is happening Tuesday, July 15 at 6:30 PM at our Two Waters Wealth office in Huntersville.

It’s called Recession-Ready Retirement, and it’s for people who are retired or within about 10 years of retirement who want to stress test their plan and make sure everything — income, investments, taxes, healthcare — is working in sync.

✔️ Real planning strategies
✔️ Small group format (just 15 people)
✔️ Our brand new Recession Resilience Scorecard included

This isn’t a sales pitch. It’s a space to learn, reflect, and walk out more prepared than you walked in.
