The IRS is aware that CP53E notices may have been sent in error, such as when overpayments are scheduled to be applied to 2026 estimated tax or in cases where the submitted return calculated a balance due. Until further guidance is issued, the IRS is not recommending any further action.

Once a taxpayer receives CP53E notices, they have 30 days to update/add their bank account. This can only be done using their online account. See our resources to help with IRS online tools.

We are aware of fraudulent CP53E notices circulating with QR codes that direct taxpayers to non‑IRS websites. Taxpayers should exercise caution and verify that any QR code links to irs.gov before proceeding.

For taxpayers trying to enter a waiver for paper check, they are able to call the IRS or submit the waiver using their individual online account. Waivers are very narrow and more information can be found here.

Just a reminder that the deadline to pay your third quarter estimated taxes is September 15. This applies to self-employed individuals, investors, retirees, and others with income not subject to withholding.

If you don't pay enough estimated tax by the due date, you may be charged a penalty by the IRS. So it's important to get your payment in on time.
