Recency bias is when investors give too much weight to the latest headline and assume today’s market reaction will continue indefinitely.

Take oil as an example.

If fears of a Strait of Hormuz closure push oil toward $100/barrel, the easy assumption is: “Oil is only going higher from here.”

But markets don’t move in straight lines. Supply responses, policy decisions, demand destruction, positioning, and de-escalation can all change the picture quickly.

The lesson: react to new information, but don’t let the most recent price move become your entire investment thesis.
