One of the things I appreciate about reading thoughtful economic commentary is that it reminds me not to let one headline shape my entire outlook. Immigration is one of those hot topics with a lot of differing opinions, so I was hesitant to share this because I want to avoid any misunderstanding that I'm ever advocating for or against any particular policy. With that in mind, regardless of where we each stand on the current policies, it can be helpful to set that aside momentarily and understand how changes in immigration are affecting the economy.

An article I read a few weeks ago makes the case that with immigration slowing dramatically, we simply have fewer people entering the workforce. A few things that stood out to me:

✅The economy now needs far fewer new jobs each month to keep unemployment stable because immigration has slowed so much.

✅Strict immigration enforcement is keeping out many low-skilled workers so low-skilled natives and legal residents should have more bargaining power.

✅Income gains have been faster for low-income workers than high-income workers. But overall, wage growth has remained solid, suggesting the labor market is still relatively healthy.

It's a good reminder that the economy is nuanced, and that's why it's so important to look at the bigger picture instead of reacting to a single headline.

I have a love-hate relationship with social media. In the span of a few minutes, I can catch up with an old friend, find a new recipe I want to try, and come across someone who is certain they know where the financial markets are headed next.

I’ve been thinking lately about how much what we see in our feeds can influence what we think about and worry about. If your feed is filled with financial influencers, it can be easy for all of that financial noise to start taking up more space in your head than it deserves.

Sometimes it’s worth taking a look at who you follow and making a little more room for the things you actually enjoy such as your hobbies, your community, people you care about, or simply things that make you smile.

It’s also worth remembering that many people creating financial content are rewarded for getting attention. Dramatic predictions and scary headlines get clicks, but that doesn’t mean they have much to do with you, your goals, or your long-term financial well-being. I like to think of them a little like movie trailers: designed to grab your attention, but not necessarily tell you the whole story.

And if something does pop up in your feed that makes you wonder (or worry) about something, jot it down and bring it to our next conversation. I’d much rather we talk through it together than have you wondering whether it’s something you should be concerned about.
