The old retirement playbook assumed one career, one pension, and one finish line. Maybe the biggest retirement risk isn't running out of money. It's planning for a retirement that no longer exists.

The shift from pensions changed the story.

Imagine if it was a secret that assembly was on you at Ikea? Financial services can be like that sometimes. Hiring a tax, legal, and financial pro does not mean you have a team if they're not coordinating. If you like assembling that's fine, but buyer beware about how much is on you.

Turning 59 isn’t just another birthday. It can be one of the last opportunities to meaningfully boost retirement savings before the focus shifts from accumulating money to using it wisely.

Know where you stand: Benchmarks can help, but your real target depends on spending, health care, Social Security, and lifestyle goals.

Use catch-up options: Higher contribution limits can help late-career savers make the most of peak earning years, especially before retirement begins.

Plan for withdrawals: Staying invested, building a cash buffer, and timing Social Security can all affect how long savings last.

Retirement often feels far away… until it suddenly doesn’t.

One thing I’ve noticed: people rarely regret looking at the numbers sooner. They regret assuming they had more time than they did.

If retirement is starting to feel a little closer than expected, three worthwhile questions to ask:

What’s the gap? Look at your savings, pensions, and Social Security estimate to get a clearer picture of what your future income might realistically look like.

Can you save more during your highest-earning years?
SECURE 2.0 created larger catch-up contribution opportunities for many workers ages 60–63.

Have you thought through your Social Security timing? For some people, delaying benefits can meaningfully increase lifetime income. For others, claiming earlier may be perfectly reasonable. Context matters.

The bigger point is this: retirement planning isn’t about finding a perfect answer. It’s about understanding your options while you still have flexibility to act.

Try not to panic—there are ways to bridge the gap.

Want to pass on your wealth seamlessly to loved ones? A living trust could be the answer because it lets you keep control of assets during your lifetime and helps your heirs avoid the probate process after you die. See if it’s right for your situation: https://bit.ly/4aOuRqJ

A living trust is a great estate-planning tool for some people. Here's how to know if it's right for you.
