📋 Retirement Reality Check

When planning for retirement, many people focus on income, investments, and Social Security. But one of the largest expenses retirees face is healthcare.

Fidelity estimates the average retiree will need $185,500 to cover healthcare expenses in retirement, even with Medicare. And that estimate doesn't include costs like long-term care, dental, or vision expenses.

A well-rounded retirement plan should account for more than just your monthly living expenses.

You've worked hard for retirement. But have you planned for it?💭

One thing I've learned over my years in financial planning is that preparing for retirement involves much more than reaching a certain savings goal.

It's about creating a plan that considers your income, investments, taxes, and the lifestyle you want to enjoy.

I recently joined Mallory Hoff on The Money Report to talk about how we help individuals and families prepare for this important chapter of life.

At Wolf Retirement Navigation, our goal is simple: help you make informed financial decisions so you can spend less time worrying about retirement and more time enjoying it.

📊 Did you know September and October are often considered some of the market's most volatile months?

While market swings can feel unsettling, retirees can help reduce the impact by:

✔️ Having an Income Plan
✔️ Maintaining a Cash Reserve
✔️ Exploring Guaranteed Income Sources

While no one can predict what the market will do next, having a strategy in place can help you stay focused on your long-term retirement goals instead of short-term market noise.

💡 Are you prepared for the next bout of market volatility?

Losing a spouse is one of life's most difficult experiences. The last thing anyone should have to worry about during that time is an unexpected financial burden.

Unfortunately, the financial impact of losing a spouse can be significant. Higher taxes, increased Medicare premiums, and changes to Social Security benefits can catch surviving spouses off guard.

In this clip from Jacksonville's Retirement Coach, I discuss what's often called the "widow's penalty" and why planning ahead can make such a meaningful difference.

After 25 years of helping individuals and families prepare for retirement, one thing I know for certain is that a good retirement plan should protect more than your finances. It should also help protect the people you love.

Retirement doesn't necessarily mean retiring from taxes.

You may have spent years focusing on how much you've accumulated in your 401(k), IRA, and other retirement accounts—but have you considered how much of that money you'll actually get to keep?

Withdrawals from certain retirement accounts may create taxable income; and decisions surrounding RMDs, Social Security, Roth conversions, and the timing of withdrawals can all become part of the bigger retirement tax picture.

That's why tax planning shouldn't begin "after" you retire.

As part of National Retirement Planning Month, take some time to look at your retirement savings through a different lens: "It's not only about what you've saved. It's also about how you plan to access it."

📈 The annual Social Security COLA announcement is a reminder that inflation can have a lasting impact on retirement income.

COLA stands for Cost-of-Living Adjustment, the annual increase designed to help Social Security benefits keep pace with inflation.

Current projections suggest the 2027 COLA could land between 3.1% and 3.6%, potentially adding about $60 to $75 per month to the average $2,000 benefit. If those estimates hold, it would represent the largest Social Security benefit increase since 2023.

💡 Retirement Tip: Don't focus solely on your benefit increase. Take time to review your overall retirement income strategy and consider how rising expenses, healthcare costs, and inflation may affect your long-term budget.
