Let us help you attain financial freedom. Evers and Company, CPA's, L.L.C. began business in 1974 and through steady growth has become a well-known and respected firm in Central Missouri. Our concepts of service are: A professional service can only be acquired from someone who is capable of rendering that service; the successful performance of the service depends on an understanding of the client's business; a professional relationship includes an obligation to raise questions and suggestions; and a professional service includes both promptness and thoroughness in responding to requests from the client. Our Expertise in serving not-for-profit organizations and the auditing experience of our partners and professional staff qualifies us to serve as your accountants and auditors. Our philosophy of service requires a close understanding of your business, and an involvement on a regular basis with your management in order to maintain an awareness of your financial and accounting objectives, goals and needs; to assist in developing plans to obtain such goals; and to monitor progress for developments which may affect planning and year-end budgeting. The size of Evers and Company is important to clients for two reasons. First, the firm is small enough so that our professional staff can maintain an intimate knowledge of a client's business and needs. Second, the firm is large enough to have specialists available in the various disciplines of the profession which includes, accounting, auditing, income taxes, management, consulting services, and data processing services. At the present time, the firm consists of thirty personnel, sixteen of which are CPAs. The partners of Evers and Company have both the technical background and the practical business experience required to understand and contribute to client decisions in a consulting capacity. The counsel our clients receive comes from the partners' educational and business backgrounds, supplemented by our experience with a wide spectrum of clients in an almost infinite variety of industries and types of businesses.

The IRS has released its 2026–2027 per diem rates for certain business travel expenses, effective Oct. 1, 2026. Under the high-low substantiation method, the rate for lodging, meals and incidental expenses for travel to high-cost localities within the continental United States (CONUS) rises to $329 per day, from $319. The rate for other CONUS localities rises to $230, from $225. The portion attributable to meals remains $86 for high-cost areas and $74 for other areas. The incidental-expenses-only rate remains $5. Employers can pay more than the IRS per diem rates, but excess amounts generally must be substantiated or treated as taxable wages. Contact us at (573) 635-0227 to learn about all your options for substantiating business travel expenses.

If your business offers employees a 401(k) plan, be sure to comply with all applicable regulations. Misunderstanding or inadvertently ignoring eligibility rules — for example, when workers must be allowed to start participating — can result in IRS penalties. It can also harm employees who are mistakenly excluded. Contact us at (573) 635-0227 with questions.

Cryptocurrency holders: Be alert for a new IRS impersonation scam. Fraudsters are mailing fake IRS letters directing recipients to a bogus “Digital Asset Compliance Portal.” The letters instruct recipients to scan a QR code that leads to a fraudulent website designed to look like IRS.gov. The site may ask for personal information, cryptocurrency wallet details, or exchange account credentials that criminals can use to steal identities or digital assets. If you receive one of these letters, don’t respond. Report any suspicious communication to the IRS immediately. If you have questions about an IRS notice or digital asset reporting, we’re here to help. Contact us at (573) 635-0227.

The IRS says you’re deceased, but you’re very much alive. It sounds unbelievable, but this unusual situation can happen when an incorrect Social Security number (SSN) is entered on your tax return or when Social Security Administration (SSA) records mistakenly indicate that you or your spouse have died. If you receive IRS Notice CP01H, verify that the SSN on the return in question matches your Social Security card. If it does, contact the SSA to see whether its records need to be corrected. Then follow the notice instructions to unlock your IRS account. Call us at (573) 635-0227 for help resolving this issue promptly.

Giving away assets during your life can reduce the size of your taxable estate. One option is to pay someone’s tuition or medical expenses. Such payments can be gift-tax-free — but only if you make them directly to a qualifying educational institution or medical provider. (Advancing the funds to a loved one or reimbursing previously paid expenses doesn’t count.) Unlike making gifts under the gift tax annual exclusion ($19,000 per recipient for 2026), there’s no limit on the amount of tuition or medical expenses you can pay tax-free. Call us at (573) 635-0227 to learn more about lifetime gifts.

If you’re responsible for collecting, accounting for or remitting federal taxes withheld from employee paychecks, beware of the trust fund recovery penalty (TFRP). As a responsible individual, you may be personally liable for a 100% penalty on income and employment taxes your business either fails to collect or fails to remit to the IRS. Your actions must be “willful,” meaning you’ve been, or should have been, aware of the responsibility and either intentionally disregarded the law or were indifferent to it. According to the IRS, no “evil intent or bad motive” is required. Call us at (573) 635-0227 if you receive a letter from the IRS about the TFRP or for help with tax compliance.
