A 20–30% annuity bonus can certainly get your attention, but do you know what that “bonus” actually means?

Annuities can be valuable retirement planning tools when they’re properly coordinated with your overall financial plan. Before making a long-term commitment, understand the surrender period, withdrawal provisions, income benefits, fees, and who will be there to service you after the sale.

At Brookstone Financial, we’re local fiduciaries committed to helping you make informed retirement decisions.

This week, the Federal Reserve held interest rates steady, economic growth continued at a more moderate pace, and inflation showed signs of improvement while remaining above the Fed’s long-term goal. Labor-market data also indicated that employers remain cautious, but widespread job cuts have not emerged.

What should long-term investors remember? Economic indicators rarely move in the same direction at the same time, and one week of news should not outweigh a carefully designed financial plan. Staying diversified, maintaining an appropriate level of risk, and focusing on long-term goals remain sound investing principles.

Should you accelerate or defer deductions?

Accelerating a deduction means paying an eligible expense before year-end so it may count toward this year’s taxes. Deferring means waiting to claim it in a future year.

The right timing may depend on your income, expected tax bracket, available deductions, and whether “bunching” expenses—such as charitable contributions—could help you itemize.

The goal isn’t simply to claim the biggest deduction today. It’s to consider when that deduction may provide the greatest overall benefit.

Culture Friday | Meet Seth Stewart

When he's not helping clients build financial confidence, you'll often find Seth Stewart on the water with a fishing rod in hand.

One thing fishing and investing have in common? You don't rely on just one bait. Experienced anglers carry a variety of lures because conditions change, and different fish respond to different presentations.

Investing works much the same way. Rather than relying on a single investment or strategy, a thoughtfully diversified portfolio is designed to help navigate changing market conditions and pursue long-term goals.

At Brookstone Financial, we believe success comes from having the right mix of investments, just like having the right tackle in the boat.

What's your favorite thing to fish for?

Financial markets are navigating a busy week of corporate earnings, economic reports, changing oil prices and the Federal Reserve’s latest interest-rate decision.

Although these developments can create short-term volatility, investors should avoid making long-term decisions based on a single headline. A diversified portfolio, appropriate risk level and disciplined financial plan can help keep temporary uncertainty in perspective.

Contact Brookstone Financial if you have questions or would like to schedule a portfolio review.

Should you pay taxes now or later?

That is one of the primary differences between a Roth IRA and a Traditional IRA.

Traditional IRA contributions may be tax-deductible, depending on your income and circumstances. The money grows tax-deferred, and withdrawals are generally taxed as ordinary income in retirement.

Roth IRA contributions are made with after-tax dollars, so there is no immediate tax deduction. However, the money can grow tax-free, and qualified withdrawals in retirement are generally tax-free. Roth IRAs also do not require minimum distributions during the original owner’s lifetime.

Neither account is automatically better for everyone. Your income, tax situation, retirement timeline, and financial goals can all influence which approach makes sense.

Contact Brookstone Financial if you have questions about how Roth and Traditional IRAs may fit into your retirement plan.

Most people know they should name a beneficiary—but did you know there are different types of beneficiary designations?

Primary and contingent beneficiaries are the most common, but terms like Per Stirpes and Per Capita can also affect how assets are distributed. Taking the time to understand these options can help ensure your wishes are carried out according to your account designations.

This week's educational post explains five common beneficiary designations in simple, easy-to-understand language.

If you have questions about beneficiary designations or your overall financial plan, contact Brookstone Financial. As fiduciaries, we're here to educate and help you make informed decisions.
