More sales sounds like good news. But if your expenses are going up just as fast, you may not be keeping much more money.

That’s why it’s important to know what’s coming in, what’s going out, and what’s actually left for the business.

Your books should help you see that clearly especially when you're growing and making bigger decisions.

Comment BOOK if you want to better understand where your business money is going.

Your business can have more sales, more customers, and more work without becoming more profitable.

If revenue is growing but profit isn't, it's time to look at what's happening with your business expenses, profit margins, and cash flow. Rising payroll, operating costs, materials, and other expenses can quickly reduce the money your business keeps.

Accurate, up-to-date bookkeeping helps business owners see where their money is going and understand whether the business is actually becoming more profitable.

Revenue can tell you how much business you're bringing in, but it doesn't tell you whether the business is actually making money.

Profit gives you a clearer picture of what you're keeping after the costs of running the business. It's an important number to understand when you're deciding what to spend, what to charge, whether to hire, and how much you can take home.

Accurate bookkeeping helps you have that information when you need it.

Hiring can be the right move when your team is stretched thin, but the cost goes beyond the hourly rate or salary.

You also need to account for payroll taxes, benefits, workers’ compensation, training, equipment, and the additional overhead that comes with bringing someone onto the team. Those costs can add up quickly and affect both your cash flow and profit.

Before you commit to another ongoing expense, look at what the business can realistically support and what the additional revenue would need to be to make the hire worthwhile.

More revenue doesn't always mean more money left over. Rising expenses, higher payroll, changing margins, and the cost of generating that additional revenue can all affect the result.

Accurate bookkeeping helps you see what's changing behind the revenue and whether your growth is actually benefiting the business.

A contractor can have plenty of work and still struggle to make payroll.

One common reason is timing.

You pay your crew, suppliers, and subcontractors now. Your customer may not pay the invoice for another 30, 60, or 90 days.

If you're regularly putting payroll on a credit card to cover that gap, it's worth looking at your cash flow more closely.

Review your unpaid invoices, payment times, upcoming payroll, and major job costs. You need to know how much cash has to leave the business before the money from those jobs comes in.

A profitable business still needs cash available when the bills are due.

If you're using credit to bridge the gap, start by finding out where the timing problem is.
