Ten years ago today, our lives changed forever.

On September 2, 2016, Nick and I lost our home in a fire. In a matter of hours, everything we owned was gone. The things we had spent years building, the belongings that held memories and meaning, and the sense of security we thought we had all disappeared in a single day.

Looking back, there are still parts of that experience that are difficult to talk about. But there is one thing I know for certain: no one ever expects to be the person on the receiving end of a disaster.

That's one of the reasons I'm so passionate about what I do today. Insurance isn't about a policy. It's about people. It's about having the right coverage before you need it. It's about making sure a bad day doesn't become an impossible one.

Over the past couple years, I've sat with families after house fires, storms, vehicle accidents, illnesses, and unexpected losses. Every time, I remember what it felt like to stand where they are standing. I can't prevent bad things from happening. None of us can. But I can help people prepare for them.

Ten years later, I'm incredibly grateful for the family, friends, first responders, and community members who helped us rebuild. That experience shaped who I am, strengthened my faith, and gave me a deeper understanding of why this work matters.

If there's one thing I hope people take away from our story, it's this: review your coverage before you need it. The day you discover whether your protection is adequate is not the day you want to be asking questions. Ten years later, we're blessed, we're stronger, and we never take a single day for granted.

September is Life Insurance Awareness Month. If you're not 100% sure what coverage you have, let's review it together. You might be surprised by what you find.

One of the biggest misconceptions I run into is this: "I already have life insurance through work or my bank."

Maybe. Maybe not.

This week alone, I spoke with two local credit unions, and both shared that many members don't realize their coverage is often only ACCIDENTAL death coverage, not traditional life insurance.

The same goes for workplace benefits. Some employer-provided plans offer valuable coverage. Others may be limited in amount, tied to your employment, or difficult and expensive to replace later if your health changes.

Here's the question I ask:

If you didn't come home tomorrow, exactly how much would your family receive, from where, and under what circumstances? Most people don't know.

When you own your own life insurance policy, YOU CONTROL IT. It doesn't depend on where you work, who your employer is, or whether benefits change next year. Life insurance isn't something you want to assume is there. It's something you should know is there.

September is Life Insurance Awareness Month.

One of the hardest truths to think about is this:

If someone you love doesn't come home, their paycheck doesn't either. Mortgage payments, utilities, groceries, college plans, and everyday expenses continue, even while a family is grieving.

Life insurance creates a financial cushion that allows loved ones to focus on healing instead of worrying about how they'll make ends meet. It's not just a policy. It's a plan for the people who matter most in your life.

Are you a local farmer that wants to set yourself apart from others? Consider getting MAEAP certified!

MAEAP Certification stands for the Michigan Agriculture Environmental Assurance Program. It is a voluntary program administered by the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) that helps farmers and landowners identify and reduce environmental risks on their property.

Feels like Northern Michigan is starting to change seasons overnight. Summer isn't gone yet, but fall is definitely sending reminders! We are entering that sweet spot of the year - warm afternoons, cool evenings, campfires, lake days, windows down.

Summer isn't over yet, friends. Let's finish August strong and roll into this week with a little gratitude and a lot of momentum. 🍂☀️

Thank you!!

DO YOU KNOW?

When you choose the Feike Agency - Farm Bureau, you're doing more than protecting your home, auto, farm, business, or family.

You're helping make a difference right here in our community.

Because of the trust you place in us, we're able to support local food pantries, provide school supplies to students who need them, sponsor youth programs and community events, support our schools, contribute to local fundraising efforts, and lend a hand whenever we can. Every policy represents a person, a family, or a business that chose to work with us. That trust allows us to reinvest in the community we all call home.

So today, I simply want to say THANK YOU.

Your support of the Feike Agency reaches far beyond our office walls. It helps create opportunities, provide resources, and strengthen the community we love.

And as your agent, I'm grateful for every client who has trusted me over the last couple years, and I will continue doing everything I can to give back to the people and places that make Northern Michigan such a special place to call home. ❤️

And this goes for all of our Farm Bureau agents - Protecting people. Supporting community. Making a difference together.

As back-to-school season approaches, the Feike Agency is putting together 24 backpacks for local students who could use a little extra support this year. Each backpack will include a backpack, tissues, mechanical pencils with lead refill, highlighters, composition notebooks, hand sanitizer, pencil bags, and folders. While we're committed to providing these 24 backpacks ourselves, anyone who would like to contribute supplies or help us reach even more students is certainly welcome to do so.

If you know of a local student who could benefit, please send our office a private message. We will handle all requests confidentially and with respect for each family's privacy.

We're grateful to be part of a community that consistently looks out for one another, and we hope this small effort helps a few students start the school year feeling prepared and ready for success.
