💳 Buy Now. Pay Later.
Payment plans can be a great financial tool when they're used intentionally. They can make necessary purchases more manageable and help spread out the cost of larger expenses.
The challenge is that it's easy to focus on today's payment instead of your total monthly commitment. Payment plans don't reduce the cost of a purchase. They simply spread the cost over time.
One purchase at $12.99/month may not seem like much.
Then you finance another item for $24.99/month.
Then another for $17.99/month.
Individually, each payment feels small. Together, you've just committed yourself to $55.97 every month. That's an expense you'll need to budget for before making your next purchase.
Before choosing a payment plan, ask yourself:
✔️ Is this a need or a want?
✔️ Do I need it today, or could I save that monthly payment over the next few months and buy it outright?
✔️ Does this payment plan include interest or fees that increase the total cost?
✔️ Do I already have other purchases on payment plans? If I add this one, what will my total monthly payment be?
✔️ Will I still feel comfortable making all of these payments next month if an unexpected expense comes up?
💡 Wise Tip: Buy Now, Pay Later works best when it helps you purchase something you've planned for, not something you're using the payment plan to justify. Before you check out, add up all of your current payment plan commitments. Looking at the total monthly cost instead of each individual payment can help you make a more confident financial decision.
