Hot take: The IRS is wrong more often than most business owners realize.

We get IRS and state notices for clients all the time... and one of the first reactions is usually:

“What did we do wrong?”

A surprising amount of the time? Nothing.

Payments get applied incorrectly. Returns get processed incorrectly. Their system doesn’t match what was actually filed. States ask for information they already have.

Of course, sometimes there IS something that needs to be corrected. We’re human too.

But an IRS notice isn’t a verdict. It’s something that needs to be investigated.

So if you get one:

Don’t panic.
Don’t automatically assume your return was wrong.
And definitely don’t just pay it without having someone review it.

Sometimes the IRS is right.

And sometimes… they’re just wrong. 🤷‍♂️
