A Hidden Piece of Willowdale History: Willow House (Former Taggarts Tavern)
If you've ever passed the southwest corner of Route 82 and Route 926 in Willowdale, you've driven by one of the area's oldest surviving landmarks. Long before Willowdale had its current name, this crossroads was known as Taggarts Crossroads, and Willow House served as the historic Taggarts Tavern, welcoming travelers through rural Chester County.
What makes this building so fascinating is that it's actually a story told in stone!
The oldest section of the house dates to the late 1700s, when a modest stone structure was built. As the community grew, additions in the early 1800s expanded the building, while a carriage shed and stable supported the steady flow of travelers passing through the crossroads. Even today, careful observers can spot evidence of these different construction periods in the walls and layout of the building.
