You'd think as a CPA, I'd be the world's biggest fan of starting an LLC...
And I do love that it separates you from your business and offers personal liability protection, but there's a lot I think business owners should know before they start filing LLC paperwork.
First, an LLC doesn't mean suddenly every expense you have is a write-off.
It doesn't automatically reduce your tax bill.
And it most definitely means you need to be on top of your bookkeeping game! π’
I see way too much misinformation on social media that tells you that starting an LLC is some secret tax hack to unlimited write-offs. In truth, opening an LLC can add additional compliance requirements, annual fees or filings depending on your state, and sometimes separate tax returns based on how your business is structured and taxed.
But if you want an LLC for the liability protection, flexibility for tax elections, and to make your business feel more legitimate, it might be the right move for you!
