Kids are getting ready to go back to school, and surpriseeee I'm taking you back too! πŸ§‘β€πŸ«

Over the next week, I'm sharing everything I WISH they taught you about taxes...

Starting with tax brackets ↓

We've all heard the story about someone who turned down a raise because they didn't want to pay more in taxes. That stems from misunderstanding how our tax system works!

Moving into a higher tax bracket does NOT mean that all of your money is going to be taxed more.

Just the money that falls into that tax bracket gets hit with the higher rate! πŸ’°

So please, accept the raise!☺️

The two BIGGEST problems I see when small businesses hire a new contactor?

Not getting the contractor's W-9 and not setting up your bookkeeping software to track payments by contractor.

This combo means you're signing yourself up for a ~not-very-fun~ January when 1099s are due...

So please, save this post and refer back to it before you hire your next contractor. πŸ™

My cute little woman-owned accounting business?!

The one that changed my life, pays my bills, supports small businesses, and gave me the life I used to dream about? πŸ‘€

Women don't talk about our wins enough, so today I'm officially ~bragging~ about what Balanced Accounting has achieved over the last 8 years.

Happy Women's Equality Day!🫢

Trying to recreate your entire 2026 mileage log by triangulating your trips from your Google Maps and calendar? πŸ”

Do this instead ↓

πŸ“² Download a mileage app like Everlance or MileIQ.

They automatically track all your trips! Each week, you can go in and categorize whether they were for a personal errand or a legitimate business purpose.

More of a pen + paper person? ✍️

That's totally fine! For each trip, write down these things:

β†’ The date
β†’ Starting location + destination
β†’ Total business miles
β†’ Specific business purpose
β†’ Which vehicle you drove (if you drive multiple)

Whatever you do, the IRS wants you to keep a ~timely~ log, so make time for a 5-minute mileage review in your calendar each week. πŸ“†

THEN & NOW: Grim Building, Kirksville, Missouri
(C. 1905 & 2026)

The Grim Building, at 113–115 E. Washington Street in Kirksville, was constructed in 1905 for brothers Dr. Ezra Grim and Dr. Edward Grim.

Designed by the St. Louis architectural firm Weber & Groves, the handsome two-story brick building originally housed the Grim brothers’ medical offices, examination rooms and operating facilities, with additional office space rented to other professionals.

The early photograph shows the building shortly after its completion, with a horse and buggy parked out frontβ€”a scene from an era when Kirksville was rapidly growing as a regional center for medicine, education and commerce.

More than 120 years later, the Grim Building is still standing in 2026, making it one of downtown Kirksville’s surviving links to the early 20th century.

πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡ΈThe Grim Building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1979.πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ

Small Business Owners: Stop scrolling and make sure you have your own copies of these things saved right now ↓

β†’ Bank, credit card + loan statements

β†’ Receipts + vendor invoices

β†’ Sales reports from your payment processor (Stripe, Etsy, Square, etc.)

β†’ Payroll reports (deposit confirmations, filings, W-2s/W-3)

β†’ Tax records (filings, estimated tax payments, IRS or state notices)

β†’ Bookkeeping records (monthly financial statements, reconciliation reports, year-end financials)

β†’ Business formation documents (LLC/organization documents, business licenses, EIN letter, state/local registrations, etc.)

These documents shouldn't exclusively live in your iPhone files or a local folder on your laptop; make sure you're saving them to a location that isn't device-dependent! πŸ–₯️
