It’s been a busy month at Pugh! From hosting a mixer in our office with Home Federal Bank and Egerton, McAfee, Armistead & Davis, P.C., sponsoring tables at the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Tennessee Valley Greater Knoxville Sports Hall of Fame and the Knoxville Chamber Breakfast with Gov. Bill Lee, attending recruiting events, and wrapping it all up with our company tailgate, it’s been a full (and fun!) season of connecting with our community.

The saying goes, "all good things must come to an end" and that applies to our summer interns. We can't thank this group enough for their hard work, fresh perspectives and an eagerness to learn. We sure tried to sprinkle in a little fun along the way with our Day of Caring at Knoxville Botanical Gardens, Firm-Wide Update at TopGolf and a visit from an old school ice cream truck, complete with music! It was a great summer!

We are honored to announce the creation of the Larry Elmore Memorial Scholarship at Tennessee Tech University, established by David and Betty Jo Pesterfield to celebrate the life and legacy of Larry Elmore. Larry, former President of Pugh CPAs in Knoxville, passed away on March 2, 2025. A proud Tennessee Tech alum and respected leader in the accounting profession, Larry dedicated his career to mentoring young professionals, shaping industry standards and serving his community with unwavering integrity.

“Larry was a steadfast advocate for the accounting profession and a mentor to many,” said Barrett Simonis, President of Pugh CPAs. “He elevated the standards by instilling integrity, excellence, and purpose in all who had the privilege to work with him. Our firm and profession are better because of Larry Elmore’s legacy of hard work, character, and leadership.” Larry retired from Pugh CPAs in 2019.

The Larry Elmore Memorial Scholarship at Tennessee Tech will support upperclassmen accounting majors from East Tennessee, with preference given to those pursuing a MAcc degree—reflecting Larry’s lifelong passion for the profession and his deep commitment to education and mentorship.

⛳ A great day on and off the green at our firm-wide event at Topgolf last week! We had a blast connecting as a team and appreciated hearing from our President, Barrett Simonis, as he shared firm updates and a look ahead at what’s next for Pugh CPAs.
We were also lucky to welcome special guest Joan Cronan, former University of Tennessee Women’s Athletic Director. Her words on leadership, character, and teamwork left us inspired and energized.
Grateful for days like these that bring us together and remind us why our people are our greatest strength. 💙

About yesterday…we were proud sponsors of two important events. First up, Leadership Knoxville's Leadership Luncheon. The quote on the wall was “Great Cities Don’t Just Happen, Great Cites Happen Because of Great Leaders.” How lucky is our firm to work with some of the greatest, most impactful leaders in our community? Next up was McNabb Center's Spirit Awards Dinner. This award recognizes individuals who have supported McNabb as well as improving lives in their community. Our own Mr. Pugh and his late wife were honored in 2012. This year’s honorees were Bob Kesling & Bert Bertelkamp—two incredible examples of compassionate leadership. Cheers to LK's Class of 2025 and Bob and Bert for their well-deserved recognition!

Goodness! We've been recovering from busy season and now we're focused on welcoming our summer interns in a few short weeks! Times flies when you are having fun! Speaking of, some of us had a blast at Zoo Knoxville's Zoofari a few weeks ago and then this past weekend team members supported Bearden Rotary at their inaugural Kentucky Derby Party! This week is full speed ahead with several other events on calendar. We are so lucky to work, live and play in this community!
