Are you thinking of hiring remote workers?
What we all thought was a temporary trend in 2020 has become a sustainable trend that employers continue to embrace. From the ability to choose the best talent from a larger pool and reduce office space overhead to increased employee satisfaction, a growing number of employers are embracing remote work.

However, those benefits come with compliance and payroll challenges that often catch business owners by surprise. Before you hire remote workers, especially across state lines, here are the most important things to consider:

πŸ“Œ Remote employees can trigger new tax obligations
Hiring in another state may require you to register for payroll taxes, withhold state income tax, and comply with local tax laws in the employee's state, even if you don't have a physical location there.

πŸ“Œ Classification isn't flexible
Just because someone works remotely doesn't mean they're a 1099 contractor. Misclassification can lead to penalties, back taxes, and legal risk.

πŸ“Œ Labor laws follow the employee, not your business
Minimum wage, overtime, and break requirements are based on where your employee lives and works, not your business location.

πŸ“Œ Your payroll system needs to keep up
Managing multi-state payroll means you will have to stay on top of tax registrations, filings, and compliance rules for multiple states. The procedures and systems you were using locally may not scale.

πŸ“Œ Policies matter more than ever
Clear remote work policies can help you stay compliant and avoid surprises. You may need to audit and overhaul your processes from time tracking to expense reimbursements and approved work locations.

While remote hiring can be a huge growth opportunity, it is critical to ensure your payroll and compliance systems are set up to support it.

Understanding the available tax benefits for higher education can help individuals and families maximize savings. While federal tax law provides valuable credits, California’s treatment differs significantly.

American Opportunity Tax Credit (AOTC): The AOTC is generally the most beneficial credit for undergraduate students in their first four years of higher education.
πŸ“Œ Credit of up to $2,500 per eligible student
πŸ“Œ Up to $1,000 is refundable, even if no tax is owed
πŸ“Œ Covers tuition, required fees, and course materials
πŸ“Œ Limited to four tax years per student
πŸ“Œ Subject to income phaseouts

Lifetime Learning Credit (LLC)
The LLC provides a broader option for taxpayers pursuing continuing education.
πŸ“Œ Credit of up to $2,000 per tax return
πŸ“Œ Nonrefundable (can reduce tax liability but not generate a refund)
πŸ“Œ Available for undergraduate, graduate, and professional courses
πŸ“Œ No limit on the number of years it can be claimed
πŸ“Œ Subject to income limitations

Important Consideration
Taxpayers may not claim both the AOTC and LLC for the same student in the same tax year. Careful evaluation is necessary to determine which credit provides the greatest benefit.

California Tax Treatment
California does not have comparable tax credits to the federal education credits. Instead, certain education expenses may qualify as deductions, reducing taxable income rather than reducing tax liability.
As a result, the majority of tax savings related to higher education are typically at the federal level.

Education tax benefits can significantly impact your overall tax position. Connect with our team to evaluate your eligibility and optimize your savings.

How to File a Tax Extension in 3 Easy Steps

1. Fill out Form 4868
Submit IRS Form 4868 to request extra time (usually 6 more months).
This form applies to anyone who files business income on their personal tax return.

2. File it by April 15
Make sure you submit your extension by Tax Day to avoid penalties.
Keep in mind that USPS has new postmarking rules that may make you miss a deadline. Filing your extension electronically is best.

3. Pay what you owe (if applicable)
An extension gives you more time to file, not to pay.
Estimate and pay any taxes due to reduce interest and penalties.

Understanding your loan doesn’t have to be complicated.

Your principal is the amount you actually borrowed, and how much you still owe on the principal determines how much you pay in interest.
When you make extra payments, you’re not just paying more; you’re actively lowering your principal and reducing how much interest you’ll owe.

That's why even small, consistent extra payments can make a big difference!

April is here, and that means it's officially crunch time for taxes. Check out this month's tax deadlines and important information about how new USPS postmark changes may impact your return being on time.

April 15 Deadlines for Individuals
πŸ“Œ File 2025 individual income tax return or request an extension
πŸ“Œ Pay any tax owed to avoid penalties and interest
πŸ“Œ Make 2025 IRA and HSA contributions (last day to count for 2025)

April 15 Deadlines for C-Corps
πŸ“Œ File Form 1120 or file extension
πŸ“Œ Pay any tax due

Before you drop anything in the mail, keep in mind that United States Postal Service postmarks are now applied at processing centers (not local offices). That means mailed tax returns may show a later date than the date you put them in the mailbox or dropped them off at the post office, potentially causing IRS penalties, interest, or rejected filings. E-filing is the safest way to ensure your return is on time.
