Program aims to bring Christmas joy

Staff members at Lakes-Dunson-Robertson Funeral Home saw a sharp rise this year in children left without their parents, through COVID-19, cancer, or some other unspeakable tragedy.

They decided to put together a program to help.

The funeral home is taking names of children 18 and under who have lost a parent this year for its first Christmas Joy program — with names being accepted through Nov. 8.

Names should be submitted with a "wish list" of at least five items the child would like for Christmas, plus clothing and shoe sizes.

The funeral home is also looking for angels to sponsor the children and donate money, gift cards and items from the wish lists. The children will be shopped for individually.

On Dec. 21 at Del'Avant, the funeral home is hosting a celebration where the children will receive at least three items from their wish lists.

"Hopefully, they will receive all five items, plus clothes and shoes," said Dionne Gibson, with the funeral home, who is planning the event.
