Retirement money, parked somewhere other than the stock market. This is why people get excited about these accounts.

And it is why I spend so much time cleaning up after them.

Here is one that catches almost everybody:

Your Roth has more than one clock running.

Everyone knows about the first. Five years, account opened, done.

Almost nobody knows about the second.

Every single conversion starts its own.

Funded your Roth out of rental income a little at a time over five years? That is five clocks. Not one.

And your account being ten years old covers exactly none of them.

Now the part people get wrong: what those clocks actually cost you if you move the money too early. It is not what you think.

There is also an age where most of this stops mattering. Past it, you can relax. Not past it, you want the number.

“Wow! I can do THAT with a self directed IRA?!”
The first question is always “what else can it can buy?”

People get very excited about SDIRAS. And they should. These are great tools.

The expensive question to ask is what you can’t do with what you buy with it.

Here are some hints:

You can't:

Live in the property. Not one night. Not if you pay rent. (Whaat???)

Let your spouse, your parents, or your kids use it. 😤

Do the work on it yourself.

There are more squirrelly little rules like this.

None of that costs a penalty on paper.

Instead, it can end the account instead - and the whole balance is taxed at once. And guess what? That’s a lot of tax. It’s something that can sink your financial ship.

Live Q&A, September 24, we are taking questions about this - and I’m bringing in an SDIRA Superman specialist who's done this for 20+ years. Between us, we can get you sorted on your SDIRA questions.

Use this powerful tool RIGHT.

Do you know why you are set up as an S Corp? I asked the client.

She paused. Then said: my CPA set it up years ago. I trust them. I have not really thought about it since.

I asked a business owner this question recently. Seven figures in revenue. Years in business.

Her answer: my CPA suggested it years ago. I trust them. I have not thought about it since.

That answer costs people a lot of money. That’s why I want you to have a little mindshift.

Think of your relationship with your CPA in the same way you think of your relationship with your doctor. The best doctor in the world cannot protect your health if you show up once a year and nod at everything they say.

You have to bring the questions.

So here are some questions.

Here is what you should be able to answer right now:

Why am I in this entity and not a different one?
When did someone last review whether this structure still fits my revenue?
Is my salary as an S Corp owner actually defensible to the IRS?
What changed this year that I have not told my CPA?

If you hesitated, that is your sign. Put some thought into these questions. Figure out what you need to ask your CPA when you meet. Then, meet before fall starts. Tik tok. The year is getting shorter.

Filing your taxes and reviewing your structure are not the same thing. One looks backward. The other could save you thousands.

S Corp owners: Do you cover health insurance for a spouse, kid, or parent who works in your business?

Guess what. The IRS considers them a shareholder.

Not because they own stock. Under Section 318, the IRS attributes your ownership to family members on your payroll. Up and down the bloodline. Plus spouse.

That means their health insurance cannot be handled like a regular employee benefit.
It has to run through payroll. On their W-2. They deduct it on their own 1040.

If you get this wrong, you lose two deductions at once:
➤ The corporation's.
➤ And theirs.

Neither gets it back without amending the returns.

This is a snag that gets a lot of S Corp owners. Everything looks fine from the outside. Insurance is paid. Everyone has coverage. The problem shows up at tax time. 😖

If you have family on the payroll and they're covered on your health plan - check the setup.

2022, 2023, and 2024 are still open to amend if something was missed.

Comment FAMILY below and I'll get you on my calendar to talk.

The short-term rental "loophole" sounds simple: keep your average stay under 7 days and materially participate. But here's where most people get kicked back. First, one long booking can blow your average past 7 days for the year — so you have to control that. Second, for an STR you don't need 750 hours, you need 100 — but those 100 hours have to be more than anyone else's. So if you've got a cleaner going in every 7 days, their hours can beat yours, and you fail that test. Know exactly how you're qualifying before you count on the loophole.
