Q: Aren't they all kind of the same thing?

A: They're a ladder. A bookkeeper records what happened. An accountant interprets it and prepares financial statements. A CPA is state-licensed, holds continuing education requirements, and can represent you before the IRS. Plenty of businesses need all three functions, and the mistake we see most often is paying for the wrong one for the job at hand.

Worth knowing: the IRS will never call you demanding immediate payment, never text you about a refund, and never threaten arrest. If a message creates urgency and asks for gift cards, crypto, or a wire, that's the scam. When something feels off, call your CPA before you call the number in the message.

Q: "My business lost money this year. Do I even need to file?"

A: Almost certainly yes, and you'll probably want to. Filing a loss can offset other income, carry forward to future profitable years, and keep you eligible for credits you'd otherwise forfeit. Self-employed folks also generally have to file once net earnings hit $400. Skipping a filing year is one of the more expensive shortcuts out there.
