Taxpayers, let me go ahead and warn you now.

The IRS is paying attention to gambling winnings.

So if you are winning money from casinos, sports betting, online gambling apps, lottery, raffles, or any other type of wagering, please understand that those winnings may be taxable.

And no, losing the money back does not automatically mean you do not have to report the winnings.

Gambling winnings are reported as income, and gambling losses have their own rules. You generally have to itemize to claim gambling losses, and you need records to support them.

So before you act surprised when the IRS sends a notice, get your paperwork together.

Keep your win/loss statements.
Keep your W-2Gs.
Keep your gambling records.
Keep your receipts and proof.

Because the IRS is not playing about unreported income.

You do NOT have to build your business like everybody else.

Some of us are building businesses while raising children, paying bills, making dinner, answering emails, helping with homework, and trying not to lose ourselves in the process.

I want the money. I want the growth. I want the freedom.

But I also want to be PRESENT.

That means the way I build may look different.

I’m learning that anything worth having is going to require sacrifice, discipline, uncomfortable seasons, and some long nights.

But I’m not interested in success that requires me to become somebody I don’t recognize.

I’m building something that can take care of my family AND eventually give me more of my time back.

That’s also why I’m looking for partners who understand the vision.

People who want to make money, serve people, grow, learn, and build something REAL… without pretending entrepreneurship is easy.

Especially the moms.

Because some of us aren’t chasing a lifestyle.

We’re building one. 🪴

🚨 “The 1098-T Was in the File. I Thought That Was Enough.”

There was a time when I thought having a 1098-T in the client file meant I had done what I needed to do for the education credit.

The form was there.

The school information was there.

The taxpayer told me the student attended college.

So I thought…

What else was there to question?

Then I went through my IRS Due Diligence Audit.

And I learned that having a 1098-T wasn't the end of the conversation.

It was the beginning.

The questions became:

🧐 Who actually paid the qualified education expenses?

🧐 What expenses were paid?

🧐 Who was the student?

🧐 Was the student enrolled as required?

🧐 What did the taxpayer tell you about the student's education?

🧐 What documents did you review?

🧐 How did you determine the credit was allowable?

🧐 Where did you document your findings?

That's when it clicked for me.

I wasn't just looking for a form.

I was making a tax determination.

And if I'm going to make that determination, I need to be able to show what facts supported it.

Because there's a BIG difference between:

“The client gave me a 1098-T.”

and

“Here's what I asked, here's what the taxpayer told me, here's what I reviewed, and here's why I determined the credit was appropriate.”

That difference matters.

Especially when you're preparing returns claiming education credits.

A document can support your file.

But a document by itself doesn't perform due diligence.

I don't just ask:

“Do you have a 1098-T?”

I ask questions that allow me to determine why the credit is allowable.

👇🏽 Let's see where tax pros stand:
When preparing a return with an education credit, which area do you find most challenging?
A. Determining qualified expenses
B. Understanding who paid the expenses
C. Asking the right client questions
D. Documenting the eligibility determination
Comment A, B, C, or D below.

🎓 IRS DUE DILIGENCE
If you prepare returns claiming:
✅ Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC)
✅ Child Tax Credit (CTC)
✅ Additional Child Tax Credit (ACTC)
✅ American Opportunity Tax Credit (AOTC)
✅ Head of Household (HOH)
You need to understand what the IRS expects from your due diligence process.

📄 Education Credit Due Diligence
Having the education documents is one thing.
Documenting how you determined the taxpayer qualified is another.

✔️ Ask the right education credit questions
✔️ Document taxpayer responses
✔️ Capture important eligibility information
✔️ Support your credit determination
✔️ Build stronger, audit-ready client files

This could save you 💲 in an audit.

GM FRIENDS ❤️📧

If you're self-employed, a small business owner, OR planning to report self-employment income on your taxes this year...

PLEASE START PREPARING NOW!!!

If you want i can send important pre-season information. But I NEED y'all to actually READ IT. 😭

DOCUMENTATION.

DOCUMENTATION.

DOCUMENTATION. 📂💯

The information will explain:

💼 What self-employment actually means

📊 What you should be tracking

💰 Income & business expenses

🧾 What documentation you need to maintain

📂 What may be requested during tax preparation

🛡️ And how we're preparing BEFORE tax season gets here

And YESSSSS... 😭

I KNOW. I KNOW.

“Crystal, I need the MAX back!”

DUHHHH. 😂🤷🏾‍♀️

I want you to receive every LEGAL dollar you're entitled to.

BUT how are we getting the “MAX” when you can't even tell me what type of business you operate? 😳

No records.

No receipts.

No income tracking.

No expense records.

No mileage log where applicable.

Just a business name and a dream. 😭

ABSOLUTELY NOT.

And please don't wait until tax season to tell me:

“My dog ate my receipts.” 🐶

“My basement flooded.” 🌊

“I lost everything.”

Things absolutely happen—but when original records are lost, we may need to RECONSTRUCT your records using other credible documentation.

We're not just making numbers up because something happened to the paperwork. 🤷🏾‍♀️

That's why I'm telling y'all NOW.

Get organized.

Save your records.

Track your business.

LET'S GET AHEAD OF THE CURVE. 📂🔑

Because the IRS ain't playing with y'all...

AND THEY DAMN SURE AIN'T PLAYING WITH US AS THE PREPARERS EITHER. 😭🤷🏾‍♀️

So yes, we're going for the maximum LEGAL refund.

But you already know my favorite question...

CAN YOU PROVE IT? 👀📂💯

08/20/2026

🚨 FOR MY TAXPAYERS WHO STILL HAVE NOT RECEIVED THEIR REFUNDS... LISTEN UP. 👀

Some of y'all have called the IRS 15 times and received 15 different answers. 😩

“Give it another 60 days.”

“You're under review.”

“Call back in 30 days.”

“We don't need anything.”

“It's still processing.”

And six months later...

YOU STILL DON'T HAVE YOUR REFUND. 😳

Here's what taxpayers need to understand:

The IRS experienced MAJOR staffing reductions, including losses in taxpayer-service positions. New employees have been hired, and some phone operations have been working with less experienced staff.

GAO +1

That doesn't mean every IRS representative doesn't know what they're doing.

But it DOES mean you need to understand the difference between:

CALLING FOR A STATUS UPDATE
and
ACTUALLY INVESTIGATING WHY YOUR REFUND ISN'T MOVING. 🔎

Those are NOT the same thing.

Calling repeatedly just to hear:

“It's still processing...”

isn't solving the underlying problem. 🤷🏾‍♀️

And Google, Facebook groups and transcript codes can only take you so far.

At some point you may need somebody to actually review:

📂 Your filed return

📬 IRS notices

💰 Credits claimed

💼 Self-employment income

🧾 Supporting documentation

🔎 Account/transcript activity

⚠️ Potential discrepancies

📅 Processing history

Because sometimes the question isn't:

“WHERE'S MY REFUND?”

The better question is:

“WHY IS THE IRS HOLDING IT?” 👀

And baby... that's a completely different investigation.

Also understand this:

Your regular tax preparer may be GREAT at preparing tax returns and still not specialize in IRS representation, refund investigations, audits or resolution.

TAX PREPARATION AND IRS PROBLEM SOLVING ARE DIFFERENT SKILL SETS.

That's why professionals like ME exist. 😏🛡️

I'm not calling just to ask:

“Hey, where's her refund?” 😭

I'm trying to determine WHAT'S HOLDING IT, WHAT NEEDS TO HAPPEN NEXT, AND WHETHER THERE'S SOMETHING WE CAN ACTUALLY DO ABOUT IT.

And yes...

THAT IS A PAID PROFESSIONAL SERVICE. 💰

Some situations genuinely require patience because there's nothing available to expedite.

But if you've been sitting through repeated 60-day, 120-day or 180-day reviews, receiving notices you don't understand, or getting nowhere trying to determine what's happening...

Stop collecting random answers.

GET YOUR SITUATION PROFESSIONALLY REVIEWED. 💯

Because another phone call asking “Where's my refund?” may give you another status update.

An investigation is looking for the WHY. 🔎🛡️

🚨 TAXPAYERS... PLEASE UNDERSTAND WHAT A REFUND OFFSET IS.

If you owe a debt that is legally eligible to be collected from your federal refund and your refund gets OFFSET...

YOUR TAX PREPARER DID NOT STEAL YOUR REFUND. 😭🙄

Let me say it again for the folks in the back:

THE TAX PREPARER DID NOT TAKE YOUR MONEY.

If you owe certain:

💰 Federal debts
🏛️ State debts
👶🏾 Past-due child support
📂 Unemployment compensation debts
💵 Or other qualifying government debts
Your refund may be reduced or taken and applied toward what YOU owe.

That's between you and the agency collecting the debt. 🤷🏾‍♀️

Please stop getting on Facebook or going around saying:

“My tax preparer stole my refund!”

When your refund got intercepted before it ever had a chance to be released.

AND ANOTHER THING... 👀

An offset does NOT magically erase your tax-preparation bill.

Your return was still prepared.

Your return was still filed.

THE SERVICE WAS STILL PERFORMED. 💯

If your preparation fee was supposed to come from the refund and there's enough money remaining to cover it, cool.

If the offset leaves nothing available to pay the fee?

YOU STILL OWE YOUR TAX PROFESSIONAL FOR THE WORK PERFORMED. 🤷🏾‍♀️

We didn't create your debt.

We didn't take your refund.

And we don't work for free because somebody else intercepted it. 😭

Refund taken ≠ preparer stole it.

Learn the difference before you damage somebody's professional reputation over a debt that belonged to YOU. 💯

Accountability is part of financial literacy too. 🤌🏾

🚨 SELF-EMPLOYED TAXPAYERS... I mentioned this before, but let me say it AGAIN.

Some of y'all think because you went online and got an EIN that automatically makes everything you put on that Schedule C a business deduction.

THAT'S NOT TRUE.

Remember claiming the SAME business year after year means you should be BUILDING a business history year after year too. 📂

Income.

Expenses.

Receipts.

Bank records.

Invoices.

Mileage logs when applicable.

Proof you're actually operating and trying to make MONEY. 💰

The IRS expects business records to support what's being reported on that return.
IRS +1

That's why WHO prepares your return matters.

You don't just need somebody asking:

“How much refund you want?
Or
" I can get you the max"😭

You need somebody looking at the ENTIRE tax picture and asking:

“CAN YOU PROVE IT THO?” 🔑👀

Because the maximum LEGAL refund is absolutely relevant...

But being able to substantiate HOW you got there is even more important.

Anybody can type numbers.

A knowledgeable tax professional is thinking about what happens if the IRS asks you to PROVE those numbers later. 💯

Get the EIN.

Build the business.

Keep the records.

Report the income.

Claim legitimate expenses.

AND KEEP YOUR PROOF. 💯💚📂

Because tax season is temporary...

That return can follow you long after that refund is spent. 👀🛡️

Maximum refund? YES.

Made-up refund? ABSOLUTELY NOT.

It’s the middle of August and you still haven’t changed those exemptions on that W-4?

Do it now. 😭
Or
Just start putting a little money to the side so you can pay the people “I-R-S” when tax season gets here.

Sometimes the best lessons happen when it hits your pockets!

Tax pros, this is important.

NATP has officially launched two new individual tax credentials:

Accredited Individual Tax Professional (AITP)
Advanced Accredited Individual Tax Professional (AAITP)

These credentials are designed to recognize tax professionals who have developed strong knowledge in federal individual income taxation and can apply tax law to real client situations.

The AITP focuses on essential competency in individual tax.

The AAITP recognizes a more advanced level of knowledge for tax pros who handle more complex individual tax matters.

I love seeing more opportunities for tax professionals to gain formal recognition for the knowledge and skill they bring to this industry.

Because tax preparation is not just data entry.

It requires knowledge.
It requires accuracy.
It requires understanding tax law.
It requires knowing how to apply that law to real people and real situations.

Credential exams and optional education are available now, and practice tests are expected to be available September 1.

Tax pros, this may be something worth looking into if you are serious about growing, strengthening your knowledge, and positioning yourself with more credibility in the industry.

08/04/2026

If you’re doing DoorDash, Uber, Spark, Instacart and Amazon Flex making extra money, please don’t forget about tax season around the corner. Remember all money made with those companies you are responsible for paying the federal taxes.

Start keeping track of everything NOW.

What you made.
What you spent.
Your mileage.
Your receipts.

Don’t get to tax season looking at your tax preparer crazy when they start asking questions have your proper documentation in order!!
