MINNESOTA DEPARTMENT OF REVENUE HAS ISSUED A **WARNING** OF A NEW TEXT MESSAGE SCAM....

"Department of Revenue warns of text message scam impacting Minnesotans

Scam texts claim to be from the department and ask recipients to click a suspicious link

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Minnesota Department of Revenue is warning Minnesotans of scam text messages claiming to be from the department and asking recipients to click a suspicious hyperlink to update their banking information and claim a refund. These scam texts are coming from a source outside of the department. Minnesota Department of Revenue systems and taxpayer data are not at risk.

Minnesotans receiving these scam texts should:

Refrain from clicking the hyperlink in the text
Report the text as junk/spam on their phone and delete it
Contact their banking institution if they clicked the link and input their information
The Minnesota Department of Revenue will never send you unsolicited communications asking you to update your personal or financial information.

Below is the content of the scam text messages to be aware of:

Your refund request has been processed and approved. Please provide accurate payment information by [DATE]. Funds will be deposited into your bank account or mailed to you via paper check within 1 to 2 business days.

Failure to submit the required payment information by [DATE] will result in permeant forfeiture of this refund under Minnesota Statute 5747.11. reply "Y" then close and reopen this message to activate the link. If the issue persists, copy the link and enter it directly into your browser

***WALZ-CHECKS UPDATE from Minnesota Department of Revenue - UNCASHED REBATE CHECKS WILL BE REISSUED!! ***

Department of Revenue begins reissuing nearly 150,000 expired one-time tax rebate checks

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Minnesota Department of Revenue announced today that they will begin reissuing nearly 150,000 one-time tax rebate checks that have gone uncashed and subsequently expired after 60 days from their August and September issuance dates. The reissued checks will go out in two batches: one batch this week and the second batch in early December. The reissued checks will be valid for 60 days from the date of issuance.

What do the checks look like?

Paper checks appear in a plain white envelope. They will be from Submittable Holdings located in Missoula, Montana and will carry the signature of Revenue Commissioner Paul Marquart. These checks are protected by standard banking safeguards that help detect and deter fraud.

What happens if the reissued check goes unclaimed?

We will work with taxpayers who are eligible but did not get their rebate after the reissued checks void in early 2024. To avoid duplicate payments, we cannot issue a rebate payment while a rebate check is still valid but uncashed.

Any unclaimed one-time rebate payments will eventually be handed over to the Minnesota Department of Commerce’s Unclaimed Property Division.

Many people have called regarding the "Walz" Minnesota Direct Tax Rebate Checks. Note: If you qualified for a Rebate Payment and have not received one by the beginning of October feel free to call the State of Minnesota at 651-565-6595 or email [email protected]

Paper Check: Checks will be delivered by mail starting in early-September and continuing through the rest of the month. Checks will be:
Issued by US Bank and sent by Submittable Holdings Inc. — based in Missoula, Montana — who Minnesota Revenue partnered with on this program. Mailed in a plain white envelope and are protected by standard banking safeguards to help detect and prevent fraud.

We have received many calls from clients regarding their property tax and renters refunds not being what appears on their filed paperwork & here is the why -

MINNESOTA PROPERTY TAX REFUND INCREASE...
The recent Minnesota tax legislation increased refunds for the 2022 Homestead Credit Refund (for Homeowners) and Renter’s Property Tax Refund (Form M1PR). If you already filed a 2022 Form M1PR, you may see a larger refund than originally claimed.

The income requirements have not changed for claiming either the Homestead Credit Refund or the Renter’s Property Tax Refund but the refund amounts have increased by up to 20.57%.

Minnesota is updating their systems to automatically increase refunds on previously filed returns (prior to 6-14-2023) and those refunds started going out in mid-July.
