Premature tax software updates (isn’t it the worse?)
If your self-prepared tax software won’t let you take the Qualified Tip Deduction, you’re not being denied. It just your software updated the new requirements before the IRS released new forms.
To deal with this situation, the IRS issued Notice 2025-69, which explains how taxpayers can determine and substantiate their qualified tips without a special box on W-2s or 1099s for tax year 2025.
You may have to acquiesce and go to a tax preparer this year to grab that deduction. Enrolled agent, able to practice in all 50 states, and I can do it virtually.
