Football and Finance? They have something in common! 🏈 💵

That's right, football terms make great financial analogies and lessons. Here are five simple terms that can correlate to wealth management. Who knew? We did; let's kick-off!

🏈 Take a knee.
To "take a knee" means a player goes down on one knee after receiving the football, temporarily stopping the game. For your finances, taking a knee can be translated into pausing your decisions for a moment to stop, reevaluate your goals, change plans, or redirect money to where it's needed.

🏈 Audible.
Sometimes quarterbacks use game-time information to inform the direction of their plays, which means switching from the play called in the huddle to something different. This is calling an audible. In life, current events might cause you to reconsider your financial strategy, but it's always best to discuss with us before you "call an audible" and make any changes.

🏈 Formation.
The formation in football is how players on a team are positioned for a play. In finance, this is like the diversification of your portfolio. There are many options based on the intended outcome, but the critical element is that they are distributed and lined up based on the desired result.

🏈 Hail Mary.
Football players sometimes attempt incredible passes to score last-second points to win a game. As exciting as Hail Mary plays can be, they are usually made in desperation and have a tiny chance of achieving the goal. We want to avoid Hail Mary plays in your financial strategy and focus on strategically thought-out defense and offense.

🏈 Blitz.
This aggressive play by the defense is intended to stop an offensive play. In finances, there may be times we suggest financial moves to curb the effects of the market, like inflation.

We know that football is a game, and your finances are real life. Still, we're here to help you have fun with it while also reaching your goals. Sometimes, attaching analogies to financial concepts can help to view decisions differently. We wish you luck with your favorite team, both real and fantasy. New research from The Aspen Institute looks at what it calls “essential wealth”: a benchmark for financial resilience and major life milestones.

The benchmark includes having six weeks of take-home pay in savings, along with enough net worth to support goals such as homeownership and retirement security.

According to the report, about 34.5 million U.S. households fall short of that threshold.

The estimated net worth needed varies by age group:
18-29: $40,000
30-39: $120,000
40-49: $265,000
50-64: $530,000
65+: $775,000 for a couple with no mortgage

These figures are broad estimates and can vary based on income, location, household needs, and housing costs.

The broader takeaway is that income alone does not always show whether a household feels financially secure. Savings, assets, debt, housing, and long-term goals all help shape the bigger picture.

Life evolves constantly, and your legacy approach should too. Marriage, divorce, welcoming a child, health shifts, or legislative changes are all good reasons to revisit whether your current approach still matches your goals.

Review your legacy approach regularly, particularly following significant life events or legislative updates.

Summer is the time to go fishing🎣, but it's also a time for phishing to happen in your inbox! It is important to stay safe as scammers evolve. Below is a quick read of a recent phishing scenario:

"The other day, I got an email from “Microsoft” saying my account had “suspicious activity” and that I needed to log in immediately to secure it. My heart jumped for a second—until I noticed something was off. The email address looked weird, and the link they wanted me to click didn’t go to Microsoft’s actual site. (I didn't click on the link; I could tell from the address)."

Scammers are getting really good at making emails look legit. Here is a simple checklist if you think there is a phishing attempt:
😬 Do I recognize the sender?
😬 Are there spelling or grammar mistakes?
😬 Is there a sense of urgency? ("Act now!" "Your account will be closed!")
😬 Are they asking for personal information, passwords, or payment?
😬 Does the link look suspicious? (Hover over it before clicking.)
😬 Does the offer seem too good to be true?

Rule of thumb: If you get an unexpected email like this, don’t click anything. Go to the company’s website directly and check for issues there.

Here are the only emails that we send information from (we recommend saving these emails so that you can easily identify a scam before trouble happens):
