As the midterm elections approach, investors are watching closely as debates over Congressional control and the growing federal deficit make headlines.

With the national debt surpassing $40 trillion, fiscal challenges remain an important long term concern. However, history shows that reacting to political headlines can work against investment goals, as markets tend to be driven over time by corporate earnings, interest rates, and broader economic trends.

Maintaining a long term perspective and staying focused on fundamentals can help investors navigate political uncertainty and short term market volatility.

Nobody enjoys seeing red in a portfolio.

But if an investment in a taxable account is worth less than you paid, the loss may have tax value.

Selling can turn an unrealized loss into a realized one that may help offset capital gains elsewhere.

That does not automatically make it a good trade.

You still have to decide whether you want to own the investment, what you would buy instead, and whether the wash-sale rule could get in the way.

Before the year ends, look at the portfolio and the tax return together.

The 2027 Social Security cost of living adjustment is set at 3.6%, reflecting the impact of rising energy prices and ongoing inflation.

While the increase will provide higher benefits for retirees, rising healthcare costs and everyday expenses may limit its impact on purchasing power. Cash yields are also struggling to keep pace with inflation, making long term financial planning especially important.

A balanced portfolio can help investors navigate inflation and work toward preserving purchasing power over time.

The price you see on the shelf may not be the exact amount you pay at checkout.

With penny production ended, some merchants have started rounding cash purchases up or down to the nearest nickel. Depending on the total, that could mean a few cents more or a few cents less.

Paying by credit card may come with another wrinkle. Some retailers and service providers are adding surcharges to help offset card processing costs, which may increase the final price.

That means the same purchase could cost slightly different amounts depending on whether you use cash, debit, or credit.

Before you pay, take a second to compare the total for cash, debit, and credit so you know which option makes the most sense for that purchase.

One of the easiest places to leave money on the table is your own paycheck.

If your employer offers a 401(k) match, check what you need to contribute to receive the full amount available to you.

Then look one step further.

• What percentage are you contributing now?
• Where is the money invested?
• Who is listed as your beneficiary?

These are small settings, but they can sit untouched for years.

Our Ask Her program provides a clear, practical approach to reviewing your finances and setting priorities for the year ahead.

Four years ago, the S&P 500 hit its lowest point of the 2022 bear market. Today, the index has more than doubled, highlighting how dramatically market conditions can change over time.

As the bull market enters its fifth year, strong corporate earnings and economic resilience have helped drive markets to new highs. While valuations remain elevated in some areas, this milestone is also a reminder that uncertainty and volatility are natural parts of investing.

Rather than trying to time the next market shift, long term investors benefit from maintaining a balanced portfolio and staying focused on their financial goals.

Markets can change quickly.
Perspective and discipline matter.

🌴 More Americans are deciding that enjoying life now matters just as much as making financial progress for later.

A recent SoFi survey found that 72% of Americans would be willing to make slower progress toward their financial goals so they can spend more time with family, travel more, and prioritize meaningful experiences.

That doesn’t necessarily mean abandoning long-term goals. In fact, 59% of respondents said enjoying life is how they define financial progress, compared with 27% who pointed to owning a home.

The challenge is finding a balance between what matters now and what matters later. ✈️ That can mean making room for a vacation, concert, or family event while still keeping an eye on retirement savings and debt.

But charge that trip to a credit card and carry a balance, and interest can turn a two-week memory into a much longer bill.

What does financial progress look like to you: reaching the next milestone, enjoying more of life now, or some mix of both?

There are some financial decisions you can revisit in January.

Others close with the calendar.

That makes the end of the year a good time to look at what still needs attention.

• Are you getting the full retirement match available to you?

• Did this year create gains or losses worth reviewing?

• If you take RMDs, has the full amount come out?

This month, Ask Her is focusing on the year-end reminders that matter at different stages of your financial life.

A few minutes now could save you from discovering something in January that would have been easier to fix in December.
