Starting a business involves more than just getting your first customer. Depending on your business and location, you may need to:

• Form your business entity
• Obtain an EIN from the IRS
• Register with your state
• Complete any required local registrations or licenses
• Set up a bookkeeping system from the beginning

Getting these pieces in place early can save a lot of headaches later.

If you're starting a business and aren't sure what applies to you, I'm happy to help you navigate the process.

It's a quieter week around our house with the kids away at camp.

That has meant a little extra focus at work—and a little extra time in the garden. After weeks of waiting, we're finally picking fresh vegetables!

One of the things I enjoy most about owning a small business is that it allows me to build a schedule around what matters most: serving my clients well while still making time for family and life at home.

I hope you're finding a little time this week to enjoy the slower moments, too.

What's growing in your garden this year?

When is it time to move beyond spreadsheets?

Spreadsheets are a great way to start tracking income and expenses. They're inexpensive and simple.

But as your business grows, you may notice:
• Transactions are taking longer to enter.
• You have multiple bank or credit card accounts.
• You need better reports for taxes or decision-making.
• You're spending more time fixing formulas than running your business.

That's usually a sign it's time to consider bookkeeping software.

The good news? You don't need the most expensive system. There are affordable options that can save hours of work and provide much clearer financial information.

If you're wondering whether it's time to make the switch, I'd be happy to help you evaluate your options.

This week's office view...

✔️ Cleaning up bookkeeping records for a client so they can finally see accurate financial reports.
✔️ Helping a brand-new business get everything set up at the federal, state, and local levels.
✔️ Working with one of my quarterly bookkeeping clients to keep her books organized as her business continues to grow.

No two weeks look exactly alike, but they all have one thing in common: helping business owners spend less time worrying about paperwork and more time running their business.

Happy Independence Day!

This year marks 250 years since our nation's founding—a milestone worth pausing to reflect on.

As a small business owner, I'm grateful for the opportunity to serve other small businesses, nonprofits, churches, and families in our community. The freedom to build something meaningful, serve others with our gifts, and invest in our local communities is a blessing I don't take for granted.

Whether you're spending today with family, watching fireworks, grilling out, or simply enjoying a slower pace, I hope it's filled with gratitude for the many blessings we enjoy.

From my family to yours, Happy Fourth of July!

As many of us head into a holiday weekend with family cookouts, fireworks, and time together, here's one reminder for fellow business owners:

Don't forget to step away from work.

There will always be another email to answer, another project to finish, or another item on the to-do list.

Time with family, friends, and the people who matter most is an investment that pays dividends you can't measure on a balance sheet.

Wishing everyone a safe, joyful, and restful Independence Day weekend!

Can you believe we're already halfway through the year?

July is one of my favorite times to review business finances because there's still plenty of time to make adjustments before year-end.

Here are three questions every business owner should ask:
✔️ Are my books up to date?
✔️ Am I setting aside enough for taxes?
✔️ Do I understand where my business is making (or losing) money?

Taking an hour now to review your numbers can prevent a lot of stress next spring.

If your bookkeeping has fallen behind, mid-year is the perfect time to get caught up and move forward with confidence.

One thing gardening has taught me is that healthy growth happens because of consistent attention—not because of one big day of work.

The same is true for bookkeeping.

+ Regular reconciliations.
+ Consistent recordkeeping.
+ Small problems addressed before they become large ones.

Whether I'm pulling weeds in the garden or cleaning up a set of books, steady maintenance always beats emergency repairs.

One of my favorite projects is a bookkeeping cleanup.

There's something satisfying about taking months of disorganized records and turning them into financial reports a business owner can actually trust.

Even better? Once the cleanup is complete, we can put monthly systems in place so they don't have to go through another cleanup again.

If your books have gotten behind this year, don't wait until tax season. A mid-year cleanup is often the easiest path back to accurate financials.

Some weeks are full of client meetings. Other weeks are full of the work that makes those client meetings successful.

This week I'm:
• Finalizing a bookkeeping cleanup engagement for a new client.
• Building systems for ongoing monthly bookkeeping.
• Studying for my Enrolled Agent exam.
• Planning lessons for the upcoming Classical Conversations year.

Not every important task is visible—but every one of them helps me serve clients better.

What behind-the-scenes project are you working on this week?
