"Bobby Bonilla Day" is one of my favorite stories of the year. In 2000, the Mets bought out Bobby Bonilla's contract for roughly $5.9M. Instead of taking the lump sum, he deferred the payout at an 8% interest rate. In 2011, he began receiving annual payments of $1,193,248.20, and he'll continue receiving that amount every year through 2035. This is a great reminder that comprehensive planning should go beyond investments and include income planning, taxes, insurance, risk management, deferred compensation, and annuity strategies. While annuities are not right for everyone, the ability to turn assets into structured future income can be powerful when used appropriately.

Great week in San Diego for the Gateway Financial Advisors, Inc. Annual Awards Conference. Always grateful for the opportunity to learn, celebrate great work, and reconnect with people who are committed to serving clients the right way.

This trip is always more special because I get to work and vacation with lifelong middle/high school friends Andrew Wittich and Erika Washington Wittich. And this year was made even better with the surprise visit from our high school friend David Grevenberg, who drove down from L.A. to hang out with us!

When an 18- or 19-year-old enters professional or college sports, they’re stepping into pressure, visibility, family expectations, tax complexity, lifestyle decisions, and a very short earning window. The issue isn’t just that young athletes suddenly earn significant money. It’s whether the people around them are truly prepared to help them protect it, manage it, and turn it into long-term stability.
