ADVANCE PAYMENTS OF THE NEW CHILD TAX CREDIT
Starting July 15, 2021, the IRS will begin issuing advance monthly payments of the increased 2021 Child Tax Credit to eligible taxpayers. Taxpayers with child dependent(s) under 6 could be eligible for up to $300 monthly per child and taxpayers with child dependent(s) between the ages of 6 and 17 could be eligibility for up to $250 monthly per child.
IMPORTANT NOTE: If you receive the advance payments of the child tax credit, this will lower the amount of credit you are able to claim on your 2021 tax return. Accordingly, it may be beneficial for some families to opt out of the advance monthly payments to avoid creating increased or unexpected tax liability with their 2021 tax filing. The IRS has created an online tool to enable you to opt out of the monthly distributions. If you choose to do so and would like that to be effective for the first (July 15th) advance payment, you must opt out by Monday, June 28. If you do so after June 28, it will be effective for a later month.
To opt out of the advance monthly payments, review your eligibility, or for answers to other questions on this topic, the IRS has created an online tool, the Child Tax Credit Update Portal.
