If you filed an extension back in April, you don't have to wait until October to file your return. Remember that an extension with the IRS is one to file not to pay. Penalties and interest can continue to build (if you owe taxes) as you wait to file your return.

This is one we've covered a few times before, but for the startups out there this is some important information.

Hobbies and businesses are treated differently when it comes to filing taxes. In simple terms, businesses operate to make a profit while hobbies are for pleasure or recreation.

It's not always cut and dry. Income may need to be reported and 1099-Ks could potentially be issued in either case.

Let's look at some questions to help determine if you have a hobby or a business...

β–ͺ︎ Is there an intent to make a profit?
β–ͺ︎ If the activity makes a profit, how much is it?
β–ͺ︎ Can they expect to make a future profit from the appreciation of the assets used in the activity?
β–ͺ︎ Do they depend on income from the activity for their livelihood?
β–ͺ︎ Are any losses due to circumstances beyond their control or are the losses normal for the startup phase of their type of business?
β–ͺ︎ Are operations adjusted to improve profitability?
β–ͺ︎ Is the activity carried out like a business with complete and accurate books and records kept?
β–ͺ︎ Do the taxpayer and their advisors have the knowledge needed to carry out the activity as a successful business?
