While marriage can be an exciting milestone and weddings a captivating event, here are some things to consider before you file that first return as a married couple.

◇ If either person changes their name, it should be reported to the Social Security Administration. The name on the tax return must match Social Security records.

◇ Notify employers, financial institutions, and the IRS of any address change if one or both parties moved to a new home.

◇ Review tax withholding and update W-4s with employers as tax brackets could change with updated filing statuses.

◇ A taxpayer's filing status as of December 31st determines their tax filing options for the entire year. Married people may have the option to file jointly or separately. Many factors need to be looked at to determine which filing status makes the most sense.

We've covered IP PINs before, but the IRS likes to send out information every so often. I think it's worthwhile if you don't have one already.

Anyone with a SSN or ITIN can request one for free. It's a unique six-digit number known only to the taxpayer and the IRS that helps verify the taxpayer's identify when they file a federal return.

Taxpayers must verify their identity before receiving an IP PIN. Tax professionals cannot apply for one on behalf of their clients. The fastest way to apply for one is through an IRS Individual Account.

A new IP PIN is issued each year. For those who request one online, they will need to retrieve it annually around mid-to-late January. The six-digit number must be included on all tax returns.

The IRS will never call, email, or text people requesting the IP PIN be provided back to them!!

Taxpayers who choose not to file a return because they don't earn enough to meet the filing requirement may miss out on receiving a refund due to potential refundable tax credits. The most common examples of these refundable credits the Earned Income Credit and Child Tax Credit. Too often taxpayers fail to file a tax return and claim a refund for these credits and others for which they may be eligible.

Talk to the Tax Man on whether it's worth filing your return.

Charitable donations can provide taxpayers helpful deductions when it comes time to file. It's important to keep organized records to support the deductions.

Typically, taxpayers must itemize deductions on Schedule A to claim the charitable contributions. Beginning with tax year 2026, taxpayers who do not itemize may be able to deduct up to $1,000 in cash contributions ($2,000 for married filing jointly).

For cash or monetary gifts, taxpayers should keep bank records or written communication from the charitable organization with their name, date, and amount donated. Donations of $250 or more require written acknowledgement. Non-cash donations must describe the property and its fair market value.

Remember that donations to individuals do not qualify. The IRS.gov has additional info on which organizations may qualify. Reach each out with any questions.
