CP53E Letter and Email

Many taxpayers are receiving a CP53E letter or email. How to tell if it is a scam:

1. If it is an email— it is a scam.
2. The tone of the letter. Real letters will be professional but not demanding.
3. Contact information- the IRS refers to their website (IRS.gov), scam letter refer to third party or shortened website.

How to see if your letter is legitimate:

1. Go to your taxpayer account on the irs.gov website.
2. Call the IRS at 1-800-829-1040
3. Check your refund status at Where’s my refund? On the IRS website.
