Q3 is here, and the second half of 2026 is full of opportunity for consultants who are financially prepared to take it.

Clean books, a clear pipeline, and a solid tax strategy are what separate consultants who grow from those who plateau.

Mid-year is the perfect moment to ask whether your consulting fees still reflect the value and expertise you are delivering in 2026.

If you have not revisited your rates since last year, there is a good chance you are leaving real money on the table.

Are all your active retainers and project fees actually being collected on time?

For consultants, slow-paying clients are one of the quietest but most damaging cash flow problems there is.

This week, follow up on every outstanding invoice and review your payment terms.

You know what's scarier than your bookkeeping?

Not knowing.

Not knowing if your most popular offer is actually profitable.
Not knowing if you can afford to hire help.
Not knowing what you'll owe in taxes until it's already late.
Not knowing if that "slow month" is a pattern or a blip.

Not knowing means every business decision is a guess.
Every slow week becomes an existential crisis.
Every big expense fills you with dread.

The fear of looking at your books feels protective.
Like if you don't look, the problem doesn't exist.

But the problem exists whether you look or not.

The only difference is:

When you look, you have a chance to fix it.

Whatever is in your books right now
it is survivable.
It is fixable.
It is manageable.

But only once you look.

The promise of AI bookkeeping: "Set it and forget it."

The reality: "Set it and find out in April."

Here's what happens when consultants hand their books entirely to an AI tool:

Month 1: Looks great, categories seem right
Month 3: Some transactions start getting miscategorized
Month 6: The misclassifications compound
Tax season: A professional has to untangle 6 months of AI-confident mistakes

AI is a powerful assistant.
It is not a CFO.
It is not a bookkeeper.
It is not liable for your taxes.

Use it as a tool. Not a replacement.

As May wraps up, close the month with the same rigor you bring to your client engagements.

Review your revenue against your projections, check your accounts receivable, make sure your quarterly tax payment is on track, and assess whether your business development efforts this month are setting up a strong June.

The best consultants bring exceptional discipline to their client work.

The most successful ones bring that same discipline to their own business finances.

Finish May strong and step into summer ready to grow. ๐Ÿš€

At the end of every month, one number tells you everything.

Not revenue.
Not gross profit.
Not cash in the bank.

Net profit margin.
Net profit รท Total revenue ร— 100

A healthy consulting business runs at 50-70% net margin.

Below 40%: Your pricing or expenses need attention.
Below 25%: You have a structural problem.
Above 70%: You're running lean and pricing well.

If you don't know your net profit margin right now, you don't know if your business is working.

Every other metric is just noise until you get this one right.

Check it today.

Memorial Day weekend is a natural moment to pause and think about the bigger picture.

As a consultant, are you building a business or just creating a job for yourself? The difference often comes down to financial structure: how you pay yourself, how you manage taxes, whether you have a retirement strategy, and whether your business can generate revenue without you being personally involved in every engagement.

This long weekend, take a few quiet minutes to think about where you want your consulting business to be by the end of 2026. ๐ŸŽฏ
