🔴 Most people assume that having a will covers ALL of their assets.

This is false!

➡️ Any accounts you own that require a beneficiary, such as:

- Individual Retirement Accounts (IRAs)
- Employer Retirement Plans (401k, 403b, etc.)
- Annuities
- Life Insurance

👉 At death, the proceeds from these will go to the person listed on your beneficiary form, NOT who is listed in your will. 🤯

This is a widely misunderstood concept that has led to many planning disasters.

⬇️

Example:

Bob and Sally get divorced. Bob gets remarried to Jane two years later and gets a new will done,📜leaving everything to her.

Bob assumes his will covers everything and neglects to change the beneficiaries on his life insurance and 401k, which still have his ex-wife Sally as the primary beneficiary.🤦

Bob passes away a few years later. His life insurance and 401k now go to his ex-wife Sally and NOT to Jane, even though he had his will re-done to leave everything to Jane.😩

Sally gets a pleasant surprise, while Jane gets a very unpleasant one.

I've actually seen this happen before and had people come to me after the fact. It's a bad situation that can be easily avoided.

✅ Make sure your beneficiaries for the account types above are up to date and mirror what you've put in your will (especially if you've recently been divorced)!

Fascinating chart showing % of residents paying over $1,000/month for their cars.🤯

Fun fact: More than 1 in 5 shoppers in Texas and Wyoming committed to a monthly payment over $1,000/mth in Q3 (driven by purchases of large trucks)

👉 It's important to know what you are invested in inside your work retirement plan (401k, 403b, 457, TSP, etc.).

This is critical because often I meet people who had their entire 401k plan balance sitting in a money market or fixed option and didn't even realize it.😲

🔴 A mistake like this can cost you YEARS of potential growth.

👇

This actually happened to me when I was in the Coast Guard 🛳 (about 20 years ago).😅

I had a Thrift Savings Plan and knew nothing about investing back then, so it sat in the default government bond fund earning 2-3% for 4 years, while the overall stock market did over 10%.🤦‍♂️

I didn't know any better at the time, but I still come across people with a TSP (and other plans) who have the entire balance sitting in a fixed account because they:

- Never changed their options from the default settings

- Got bad advice from a buddy or a family member who “knows this stuff”

- Switched things around once and then just forgot about it 😩

OR

Some people are nearing retirement that are invested TOO aggressively and not aware of it for the same reasons above.🫣

✅ It’s critically important to understand the investment options inside your workplace plans. Not allocating correctly could mean missing out on A LOT of potential wealth OR leaving you exposed to unwanted risk.

A common question I get is "what interest does an IRA pay?"🤔

👉An IRA doesn't earn interest or grow on its own.

✅It's the investments INSIDE the IRA that determine what your return is.

The Traditional IRA simply defers taxes until later. A Roth IRA can eliminate the tax altogether.

In an IRA you can be as aggressive or as conservative as you wish. You can invest in stocks, bonds, mutual funds, etc., or simply hold money in a savings account or CD.

I often come across people who are unaware of this and assume that IRA's pay a fixed rate of interest. That's usually because they own a bank CD INSIDE the IRA, and don't realize that the money can be invested in a variety of different options.😳

➡️ It's totally up to you and the investment type selected that will determine how much growth you get in an IRA over time.👍

Most people spend way too much time agonizing over small money decisions and not nearly enough time on big decisions.🧐

Small $3 questions: Coffee☕️, dessert, price of an Uber.

Big $30,000+ questions: Buying vs. renting🏡,
debt payoff, negotiating salary, savings rate, investment asset allocation.

✅ These big questions are the ones you want to get right. The way you address these will determine your financial success, not skipping that iced coffee.

Once the big questions are solved you can have your Starbucks without feeling guilty. 😁

This is NOT a financial plan:

❌ A computer generated report stating you have X% chance of success
❌ An investment allocation
❌ A plan of action made up entirely of "Rule of Thumb" advice

This is a REAL financial plan:

✅ A customized plan of action that is unique to your family (based on your goals, values, tax circumstances, etc.)
✅ A review of what is POSSIBLE based on your actions
✅ A guide to help you make informed decisions when inevitable life changes happen.

Too much emphasis is placed on items that are generic and not tailored to the individual.

Create a plan that focuses on the bottom 3! 👍

✅ Reasons to hire a financial planner:

- you do not want handle it all yourself

- your finances are complex

- you don't have time

- you don't get done what needs to get done

- you & your spouse can't get aligned on decisions

- you are anxious & unsure you are doing the right things

The cost of a $500,000 home.🏠

In 2021, at 2.5% interest rate: $1,976 per month.

In 2022, at 7% interest rate: $3,327 per month.😭

It's impossible to have the long-term historical perspective required for successful investing when "breaking news" is all that is ever consumed.🤦

✅The best thing you can do as an investor is to stop consuming “financial porn” from the 24/7 news media.

✅ The next best thing is to stop checking your account balances every day.

➡️ Checking your investment account balance every day is like being on a 6-month weight loss plan and checking your weight every TEN MINUTES. 🤯

Imagine the needless frustration and anxiety one would have hopping on the scale constantly like that ⁉️

Warren Buffet said it best: “The most important quality for an investor is TEMPERAMENT, not intellect.”

Sure you could be sitting in a bank CD or an annuity at 3% with no worries 😀...BUT

The S&P 500 index average return over the past 10 years is 11.8.%

➡️ $250,000 growing at 11.8% for 10 years =$808,917
➡️ $250,000 growing at 3.0% for 10 years = $337,000
➡️ That extra $471,917 isn't free. You are paying the cost right now with:

💤 Sleepless Nights
⁉️ Questioning what you own
😦 Fear of loss
🚫 Discipline to not touch your money
🤮 Wanting to throw up because of market swings

Every other time in history it has paid off to be patient and follow the tried and true principles of the wealthiest investors in the world.
