We’d like to officially introduce the newest employees at OBS.

First, we have Olive.

She handles note-taking, document review, and strategic desk occupancy. Her favorite part of the job is attending meetings she wasn’t invited to and providing unsolicited input.

Then there’s Bruno.

He supervises package inspections, quality naps, and emotional support. His performance reviews are excellent, mostly because he never argues and always looks busy.

Neither of them has any formal bookkeeping training, but they bring a lot to the team anyway.

Please feel free to stop in and say hello — they’re usually around, working very hard or at least making it look that way. And the best part, they’re Siberians! A breed known for being hypoallergenic, which is convenient since neither of them seems particularly interested in respecting personal space 🐾

1099 Season Starts Now!

January might seem far away, but now is the time to get ahead of your 1099s!

Take a look at who you’ve paid this year. Do you know which vendors may need a 1099? Do you have their W-9s on file? Were they paid by check, ACH, or credit card? Those details matter!

And don’t forget, the reporting threshold has increased to $2,000 for 2026, so it’s worth taking another look at your vendor list.

Our tip this week: Review your vendor payments, identify who may need a 1099, and request those missing W-9s now.

Because tracking down a contractor who hasn’t worked for you in six months isn’t how anyone wants to spend January!

📢 Social Security is getting a raise in 2027 — but there’s something business owners should know, too!

The Social Security Administration just announced a 3.6% cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) for 2027, giving retirees an average increase of approximately $75 per month.

But here’s the part that matters for business owners:

💰 The Social Security taxable wage limit is also increasing, from $184,500 to $192,300.

That means higher-earning employees (and their employers) could be paying more in Social Security taxes next year.

It’s a good reminder that year-end planning isn’t just about closing out your books. It’s also about preparing your payroll for what’s coming.

📣 1099 season will be here before you know it!

Good news for business owners: The 1099-NEC reporting threshold has increased from $600 to $2,000 for 2026!

But don’t let that fool you into putting off your year-end prep. Now is the time to review your vendor payments, figure out who will need a 1099, and start chasing down those missing W-9s.

Trust us, nobody wants to be tracking down contractors for tax information in January!

Reconcile Now, Not in January!

We’re officially in the final quarter of 2026, and if your books aren’t reconciled through September, now is the time to catch up!

Here’s something a lot of business owners don’t realize: Just because your bank balance looks right in QuickBooks doesn’t mean your books are accurate.

Missing transactions, duplicate entries, incorrectly categorized expenses, and even unauthorized charges can go unnoticed without regular reconciliations.

And those little discrepancies? They have a way of turning into much bigger headaches when tax season rolls around.

Our tip for this week: Take a few minutes to review your bank, credit card, and loan accounts. Make sure everything is reconciled through September 30 and investigate anything that doesn’t add up.

The sooner you catch an error, the easier it usually is to fix.
