Long but worth the read:
I received a call last night from "Chase's Fraud Department claiming to have flagged a couple of fraudulent transactions through my Zelle account. When I asked which card we were talking about (since I dont have a Chase bank account) he says "this is linked directly to your main checking account." When I told him I didn't have one and I dont use zelle he says someone online had enough information about me to open a checking account online in my name and they were now attempting to transfer 2 large sums of money through zelle. When I reiterated that I dont use zelle he tells me that because zelle is linked to my phone number all of my checking accounts are at risk. He tried to give me a case number to give to the guy at zelle that he's going to transfer me to. I told him I didn't have anything to write it down with so he says because he's transferring me he'll note that and they will have the code. So this is now starting to sound fake as hell on top of my already suspicious mind. So I'm transferred to "Zelle." This next guy starts with the same nonsense. He asks if I'm in a secure location. I told him im in the middle of a restaurant, I don't have any codes, I'm not logging into anything and don't use zelle or have a Chase checking account. He says OK I'm going to have to transfer you back to Chase. At this point I just hung up. I had already pulled enough bu****it out of them to know I wasn't talking to Chase or Zelle.
This is scary because the number came up as Chase on my phone. If you Google the phone number it is in fact a Chase phone number. I can see how people can fall for these scams. I have to say this is the most sophisticated I've ever experienced. I'm glad I kept pressing them for information because they almost had me when I thought they were calling about a credit card. Not having a Chase bank account is really what alerted me that something was off. I may have fallen for it otherwise. Stay vigilant.
Imagine picking up the phone on a quiet Saturday, only to hear someone claiming to be from the Chase Bank fraud department. They sound convincing. They say
