Celebrating Economic Development Week 2026

This week, ThomasAndrew Small Business Advisors honors the professionals who strengthen our communities, grow our economies, and expand opportunity. Among them, Certified Economic Developers (CEcDs) stand out as the gold standard in our field.

The CEcD isn’t just another “off-the-rack” certification, it represents years of experience, intense studying and research, a rigorous multi‑day examination, and proven mastery across the full spectrum of economic development practice. It’s a credential held by only about 1,200 professionals worldwide, and it signals a deep commitment to strategic thinking, ethical leadership, and community impact.

CEcDs bring the expertise needed to navigate complex challenges like business retention and expansion, workforce development, entrepreneurship, global competitiveness, and long‑term community resilience. Their work helps create jobs, strengthen local economies, and build the foundation for thriving communities.

As we celebrate Economic Development Week, let’s recognize the CEcDs who raise the bar for our profession and the communities that benefit from their dedication, curiosity, and leadership.

Here’s to the practitioners who make growth possible. Happy Economic Development Week!

At ThomasAndrew Small Business Advisors, we see economic development as a daily, tangible force driven by entrepreneurs who choose to build, risk, and grow. Behind every storefront, startup, and scaling company is someone willing to bet on an idea and put in the work to make it real.

Entrepreneurship is the engine. It fuels job creation, revitalizes communities, and brings innovation to life in ways that no top-down strategy ever could on its own. When small businesses succeed, communities gain momentum, confidence, and resilience.

This week is a reminder that supporting entrepreneurs is not optional if we care about long-term economic vitality. It requires alignment, access to resources, and the kind of strategic guidance that helps businesses move from survival to sustainable growth.

We are proud to stand alongside the builders, the problem-solvers, and the visionaries who are shaping the future of our local and regional economies.

If you’re an entrepreneur navigating growth, complexity, or uncertainty, know this…clarity and traction are within reach with the right strategy and support. We can help!

Here’s to a strong Economic Development Week and to the entrepreneurs who make it matter.

If you have never operated a small business, it is easy to underestimate the complexity.

From the outside, entrepreneurship looks like freedom. Inside, it is a constant negotiation between cash flow, staffing, customer acquisition, operations, and long term strategy. Most entrepreneurs are not failing due to lack of effort. They are stuggling under the weight of having to be excellent at everything simultaneously.

In my work with small business owners, I see the same pattern repeatedly. Strong vision. Strong work ethic. Limited structure. No clear operating system to scale decisions, measure performance, or prioritize effectively.

The result is predictable. Revenue plateaus. Margins compress. Stress compounds.

This is not a motivation problem. It is a systems problem.
High performing businesses are built on disciplined ex*****on, clear financial visibility, and repeatable processes that remove friction from growth.

This is where ThomasAndrew Small Business Advisors operates.
We bring an institutional level approach to small business. Strategic clarity. Operational structure. Financial discipline. We help owners move from reactive decision making to proactive leadership.

If you are running a business and feel like you are carrying too much of the load yourself, that is a signal to operate differently.

The difference between surviving and scaling is rarely effort. It is almost always structure.

If that resonates, let’s connect.

Excited to be a member of International Economic Development Council's first Affinity Group designed to strengthen professional influence by providing a trusted forum for dialogue among credentialed economic development practitioners (CEcD's). The coming year will be an exceptional journey raising the bar and expectations relative to the certification.

Five Signs Your Business Is Running You.

AI is great…but it’s easy for your messaging to become just like everyone else’s.

Believe it or not...common sensibilities and courtesy STILL matter.

Many business owners are great at training new staffers on the tasks of any given position…the how, why, what, where operational stuff. However, they often fail to mention or train soft skills as they’re presumed to be inherent.

They are not.

In an era of heavy electronic communication, the art of subtle and overt soft skills has dwindled.

How many times have you been a customer of a retail store and you had to initiate contact with an employee who was standing in another area of the store, or worse, buried into their phone and likely didn’t even notice your existence?

Simple greetings toward customers suggest “you (our potential revenue) are seen, welcomed and appreciated.” The greeting has immense value.

In fact, customers crave to be seen. Repeat customers crave to be recognized. The feeling of being recognized keeps them coming back.

In fact, there are many vendors or service providers I utilize that frankly don’t provide the best price or offering, but I appreciate the feeling they instill when I enter their facility.

In our tech-driven lifestyles, humanity still desires interpersonal dopamine hits.

If your staff isn’t triggering positive emotions when a customer enters…the odds of making a sale diminish.

Greetings, eye contact, offering alternatives, smiling, hygiene, etc continue supreme relevancy! Sadly, soft skills have lost the perception of leading-edge necessities. The reality has not changed.
