The End of IRS Paper Refund Checks
Starting September 30, 2025, the IRS has officially stopped issuing paper refund checks for tax refunds. All IRS refunds will now be sent electronically—via direct deposit, electronic funds transfer, prepaid debit cards, or other approved digital methods.
If a return is filed without banking info, the IRS will mail a letter asking for your routing/account numbers. If you don’t respond within 30 days, a paper check may be issued about six weeks after filing to avoid interest penalties.
What this means for you:
✔️ Ensure accurate bank details on your tax return
✔️ Direct deposit refunds faster and more secure
✔️ Electronic delivery reduces fraud and lost checks
✔️ Limited exceptions for those without access to digital banking
