Can you deduct work expenses?

This post deals with employees. Independent contractors or business owners will be dealt with in a post in the future.

Employee expenses are not deductible for the Federal tax return however, PA and the local will allow employee expenses.

Typical expenses are union dues, Professional organization dues, Supplies and equipment required by your employer but not paid for by the employer, work clothes required by your employer but not paid by your employer and not suitable for personal use such as uniforms.

Vehicle expenses for work use when required by your employer.
Home office expenses when required by your employer.
Cell phone expenses when required by your employer.
Education expenses when required by your employer and not qualifying you for a different position.
