From Sarah Catherine Gutierrez, CEO and Founder:

Aptus started 15 years ago this month. Four years prior, I was graduating from the Harvard Kennedy School, deep in student loan debt that, frankly, was unnecessary. Sure, there were necessary expenses, but the real truth was a series of purchases at coffee shops, eating out, shopping and trips. But this was no aberration. My working life from the age of 12 had been some version of spending all of my or other people’s money (translations—in and out of credit card debt).

But a well-timed presentation on the perils of the golden handcuffs as I was graduating put a fear in me that motivated significant change. Yes, I was headed to entrapment by my very first paycheck. Armed with abject fear, I rented a super cheap apartment, brewed my own coffee and built my first cash flow management system that ensured that my bills and spending added up to something far below my income.

The goal was to avoid the handcuffs. The result was money sitting an account unspent, and I didn’t hate that feeling, especially when the grace period to student loans ended and I had the ability to make payments on them – and then overpayments. What started as a visa to the land of financial freedom eventually became a passport.

Cash flow management changed my life, and I developed a passionate desire to help other people experience that same freedom. But when I looked around and saw that the financial world, even financial planning, was pretty singularly focused and paid on selling investment products or managing investment accounts, I couldn’t see the obvious way to parlay that into helping people with their cash flow management for saving and spending.

So, I set out to create a firm that did just that—offering financial planning that is driven entirely on cash flow management. What I didn’t realize was that the mechanism by which we were compensated would be at the early stages of a movement called Advice-Only financial planning. Today, Aptus Financial is one of the largest Advice-Only financial planning firms, giving early-career professionals, like physicians, the option to do financial planning at a pivotal time to buy their life.

Today, Aptus is lucky to have 17 incredibly gifted and passionate planners, student loan experts and employees working to continue and further that original mission. Over time, through the addition of retirement plans, financial wellness programs and student loan employer benefits, we are able to reach even more people. Aside from the 1,000+ households we have done financial planning for, we have over 25,000 people being directly impacted by our employer-based programs.

My biggest thanks go out to Linda Bessette, my mentor, who showed me how to build a business on budgeting and cash flow management; Tim Quillin, my incredible business partner, for taking on this challenge and making it into something scalable; to my husband, for always having my back and telling me to keep going even in those early years that were not so easy; to my kids, for inspiring me to be my best; and to my incredible team, without whom we would not be so successful.

What does the next 15 years hold? Who knows? I can only hope we will be part of building the next generation of people living in the land of the financially free.
