September is National Preparedness Month, and while most people think fire extinguishers and emergency kits, we'd add one more item to the list: a financial preparedness check.

Do you know where your key financial documents live if your laptop crashed tomorrow? Do you have a trusted contact in place in case you can't make financial decisions on your own? Are your beneficiary designations complete in case the unexpected happens? If you're a business owner, is your bookkeeping current enough that you could hand a lender or insurer accurate numbers on short notice?

A little organization now makes any disruption easier to weather, whether it's a storm, a system outage, or just an unexpectedly hectic month. From your business to your personal finances, building resilience is the kind of proactive work we love helping our clients tackle.

Mark your calendar: if you pay quarterly estimated taxes, September 15 is your Q3 deadline.

Whether you're a solo practice owner, a partner in a growing firm, or self-employed, staying on top of estimated payments keeps you from a stressful surprise next April — and helps you avoid underpayment penalties along the way.

Not sure if your estimate is still accurate after a busy summer? Now is a good time for a quick check-in with our team. We're happy to run the numbers with you.

To the entrepreneurs thinking about opening their own practice: the entity structure decision you make once can affect your taxes for years to come. LLC, S-Corp, or something else entirely — the 'right' answer depends on your income, growth plans, and how you want to pay yourself.

Our Business Foundation Services exist for exactly this moment: entity structure analysis, accounting system setup, and retirement plan guidance, all before you open your doors, so you're building on solid ground instead of retrofitting later.

If a new practice is on your horizon, let's talk before you sign the lease.

We love our home state of Michigan for many reasons- four distinct seasons, breathtaking shorelines, abundant outdoor recreation, and an excellent tax structure for retirement.

Michigan may be one of the most tax-friendly states for retirement income- surprised?

Matthew Kidd, CPA, PFS, President of Kidd Advisors, was recently interviewed by Robert Powell, CFP about retirement in Michigan.
Check out the recent feature in TheStreet which highlights reasons why retirees may want to look closer at the Great Lakes State, including:

• Social Security is 100% exempt from MI income tax
• Military pensions are fully exempt
• No state estate or inheritance tax..And more!

529 Accounts are popular college savings options for many reasons, including their flexibility. If your child receives a scholarship or chooses not to attend college, options may include:

• Changing the beneficiary to another family member
• Using funds for certain trade school or vocational programs
• Rolling eligible funds into a Roth IRA for the beneficiary (subject to applicable rules and limitations)

Back to school season may have parents thinking about the future- which likely includes college tuition payments. The thought of paying for college can be daunting, but saving early can make all the difference. A 529 College Savings Plan is often the first account parents consider for education savings.

Benefits include:
- Tax-deferred growth on investments
- Tax-free withdrawals for qualified education expenses
- High contribution limits
- Account owners maintain control of the funds

December will be here before we know it! Don't wait until year-end to make these 3 tax moves:

1. Maximize your retirement contributions. Find your plan and contribution limit at https://www.irs.gov/retirement-plans/plan-participant-employee/retirement-topics-contributions

2. Satisfy your Required Minimum Distribution. Keep in mind, a Qualified Charitable Distribution is a tax-efficient way to satisfy RMDs.

3. If you're required to make quarterly estimated tax payments, continue doing so to avoid underpayment penalties.

Year-end deadlines come fast. Stay ahead with Kidd Advisors.
