Many non-retirees feel confident they’ll retire on time. But some also think they may never fully retire. Confidence goes up when your portfolio is up, but:

A good run doesn’t mean the next decade looks the same

The is risk in assuming the party lasts forever

Are you planning for potential market corrections, or like the past 3 years will repeat themselves indefinitely?

The shift from pensions changed the story.

Most people think retirement money is “set it and forget it.” Not always. If you’ve got an IRA or 401k, a Roth conversion could change the whole game - but only if it fits your tax situation. Here’s the simple version:

You pay taxes now to move money into a Roth.

Then that money can grow tax free.

No required minimum distributions later, which means less pressure from the IRS.

And yes - your heirs can usually keep that Roth growing for 10 years after inheriting it. Big win? Sometimes.Always the right move? Not even close. That’s why this is one of those decisions worth slowing down for.

Retirement is becoming more personal.

Roth conversions are not always the answer. If you hate writing the check to the IRS, read this before you decide anything. A lot of people look at the tax today and stop there. But the real question is - what is that tax saving you 10, 15, 20 years from now? That’s why tax planning is quite different from tax preparation. One is about filling out forms. The other is about making moves that can save you significant money later.

If you’re deciding whether a Roth conversion makes sense, don’t just ask, “How much do I owe today?”

Ask, “What does this do for me long term?” Save this for later or send it to someone who keeps avoiding the Roth conversation.

The real retirement risk isn’t always overspending- it’s underspending.

People spend 40 years learning how to save, then retire and forget how to use the money. The fear is usually framed as, “What if I run out?” But for a lot of people, the quieter problem is “What if I don’t spend enough to actually enjoy the life I worked for?” That’s where the emotional side of retirement gets real. You can show someone the math. You can show them the projections. You can even show them there’s room in the plan. And still, they hesitate. Sometimes it’s just about giving permission: to book the trip, pursue that hobby, to replace the fear with a plan. To stop treating every dollar like it has to survive forever. Maybe that’s the part we don’t talk about enough.

1996 feels like it was yesterday - but the numbers say otherwise. The wild part isn’t just the nostalgia. It’s how fast everyday costs have climbed. If you’re only planning for today’s numbers, you’re setting yourself up for a potential shock later - especially with groceries, healthcare, and income in retirement. Most people don’t spend too much- they actually spend too little, because they’re scared to run out. And that can be just as costly.
